My sawzall is around ten or twelve years old but is in perfect shape. Can I get the new style tooless blade holder and retrofit it, so I can get rid of the one that requires the hex wrench?

If it's a Milwaukee, you might call one of their service centers. They're good about giving out accurate info and if you can upgrade without buying new, they'll tell you.
It depends on the model and variation of the Sawzall- some have clearance for the increased diameter of the toolless blade holder & some don't. Check with your Milwaukee dealer, otherwise I've had good luck with the Milwaukee repair reps over the phone. There are some differences in the Sawzalls over the years - my 10 y/o Super Sawzall was a 3rd generation and I believe they still make that model.
