Schluter Kerdi showers

sawdust58 | Posted in General Discussion on November 24, 2008 05:12am

has anyone installed a Schluter Kerdi shower system. Good/Bad?? Work is a little short now and I have been asked to remove a fiberglass shower and install tile. Would like to keep all the work for myself but I,m really not good as pvc pans and mortar bases.

Everyone that I hear of that uses them won't do a shower any other way now.

I just saw Tom Silva install the system. Seems as if you can wall paper, you can put their system up with NO problem, albiet alittle sloppy. The pre-sloped floor pans also seem to make it a no brainer. My question to ALL is why would one feel compelled to do the whole shower/tub wall area? I have repaired well over 100 shower/tub areas and NEVER encountered tile/wall failure more than 16-18 inches up from the shower/tub lip. My work, for the most part does not include rental properties with slum lords. Your not building a boat. It's also my understanding that the warranty is only 5 yrs.

It must be regional differences but every single shower I have deconstructed had water penetration into substrates and fasteners from base to shower head to varying degrees.

Kerdi addresses this extremely well. No premature failure or mould issues.

One concern for me is the double vapour barrier issue on exterior walls. Maybe have to use xps styro and cement board in those apps.

The other beautiful aspect of Kerdi is the wet room approach ie. kerbless showers as the europeans and aussies do.

Check out Chuck Stevens thread about the addition to his house. He goes through the whole process, step-by-step. Very detailed & thorough. The thread is pretty long so you'll have to scan down until you start seeing the pics of the inside work.

I just checked that link & it opens after the shower work is done. Looks like you have to go backwards in the thread.

Almost forgot.. if you don't or won't follow instructions to the letter then stick to other less elegant materials.

Schluter specifies unmodified thinset mortar and they mean it!!!

Modified thinset will not cure behind/between the Kerdi.

Another thing.....  that square drain is sweet, no more crappy curved cuts and it can be aligned perfectly with the grout lines.

I've done a couple Kerdi showers. The drain is so sweet, it's worth using Kerdi just so you can use the drain.I know there are contractors in my parts that are only coming up off the floor the width of the roll w Kerdi. They say they don't have any problems.Harry

How do you/they know there are no problems ;)

I think the philosophy of Kerdi is to separate all substrates and fasteners from the tile with an impervious membrane. A grout joint is not impervious. :)

Myself, why save a few bucks and not finish the job as per Schluter.

I long ago ceased to be smarter than the manufacturer of the product I am using.

YMMV as regards any and all short cuts.

None off my clients would be chuffed if they caught on to that sort of nickle and diming.

Agreed on the square drain.....Probably takes an hour less for me...

More expensive than pvc, about 25-50% more.

No quality difference between pvc and Kerdi.
