Some of y’all my have known that I have been involved in the restoration of an old one room school house here in KY.
The building predates the “recent unpleasantness” as they call the Civil War in some parts of the South.
Well today we had the entire 4th grade Class of Dan’l Boone Ele. School out for a field trip..all 95 of them. They have been studying Kentucky’s Heritage..and as a part of that, the Old School daze were a part of the curriculum.
Being as I rebuilt and refinished most of the school desks, I wasa asked to demonstrate how and why this is accomplished. I had another of the desks to show the effects of neglect, and how wood can deteriorate by exposeure to weather and sunlight and Moisture..the desk was green with Algae..LOL
Sanding, Alcohol, and shellac ,followed by wax..they were called on to guess where all of the ingredients came from..I got some great answers..Alcohol..”from a steel”..Wax? “from my ears”..etc. It was fun, and now they know about exudate from lac beetles too.
My DW is a jewelry designer, and had a lot of old beads for necklaces like what would have been in vogue in these here parts..the lil darlins got to make and keep a necklace or bracelet, with her guidance of how and why that would have been done..
We did this for fun, and it was..kids are so cool..wait till they tell thier shop teacher (if ever) about lac beetles in India.
Here are some shots..yeah, it’s me in the hat.

We had a total of two buses and the parking was tite and the road was too narrow for them to pass each other..we had one half of the kids go to the DEZARN's house ( the roof from hell thread) and eat and play old games, while the other half was split into two groups. One group inside for a "lesson" while the other half was again split into three groups for Bead work, Art work ( we also had a local artist and the News paper out) and the woodworking.
After they had enough time we switched..a mighty warm day, so we left them off easy..I only made the girls sand the desk..
again, it was a great time..and my faith in the youngest generation I have met..is restored..bright kids.

er...excuse me, where's the outhouse?"there's enough for everyone"
he he he..you must be psychic..we STILL have to build them..one for each.
The little basta..I mean kiddies had to use the "facilities" at the main house..or the woods.
The owners can't afford me..to build an outhouse, so I'll donate that time as well...can't be too difficult..Got Plans?

Cool. You done good.
Who Dares Wins.
What brand of bibs are ya wearing there? I always work Osh Kosh until they stopped making 'em. Haven't found another brand I like yet.
Sometimes I like working with kids, sometimes not. Depends a lot on how they behave, etc. I do best when working with one or 2 of them at a time.
Glad to see you working with the kids though. Anybody that wears bib overalls and works with kids is probably O.K. (-:

you're funny Bozz
If it is warm (hotter'n blazes that day) it's my "Pointer's"..cooler weather, always Carhartts..I don't wear the insulated kind, just real heavy canvas Carhartts..one of the few who actually make them in my size..32/38..
The Pointer's are a nice lightweight and cut well..don't like the strap adjusters tho' they tend to slip.
And the carpenter type britches have the dang hammer loop on the left..I hate that. I knw I saw an ad for some that are for righties ( OH JEEEZE now it's POLITICAL)...but never in my size.
So it looks like I better learn to holster the hammer either way, my tool belts are all set up for a right hand draw..just habit I s'pose. I drop the tool belt whenever possible..gettin old.
The kids were in shifts..the most I had to deal with was 10 or less at a time..that helped alot.
Thanx fer lookin..

Never heard of "Pointer's" brand. I've tries Carhart and "real work" brands. Don't really like either one much.
I never understood why the hammer loops were always on the left side either. Guess they couldn't put the pliers pocket and the hammer loop on the same side though.
I use the pliers pocket for my cell phone most of the time. It's more fashionable, I think - A cell phone holster on a redneck just doesn't look right. (-:

Last place we lived in had a two-holer. Buddy system. Here's the one holer that came with this place. Comes in mighty handy when the 'lectricity goes out<G>
My kids grew up with one wrapped in plastic, great panoramic view. They called it the "owlhouse"
Mrs 'Snort always told 'em to mention her name, they'd get a good seat<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!

"worked with him at Williamsburg...nuff said?"
Might be - If I knew what Williamsburg was.
(-:The greatest love is a mother's, then comes a dog's, then a sweetheart's. -- Polish proverb
Historic Williamsburg..in Va. The only thing besides BusCh Gardens and Newport News worth going there for.
It was a colony..(ring a bell yet) William and Mary College..any who, Roy was ( maybe still is) the Master House Wright there..he has a vast education in historical woodworking, and is an accomplished author and woodbutcher..that's where he was working, when his TV show began..like '80? or so.
He lives (did) in the Raliegh/Durham/ Chapel Hill area..in NC.
I was there in the furniture shop for a summer..great fun, talkin with toureestas and not really working..lousy pay..lots of wine, hot and humid..especially in colonial garb.
Take the clan for a visit. Very educational..if ya can squeeze in a trip to Navel Yard, ya won't be sorry.

Nice pics and work.
Its a good feeling to give back to the community, isn't it.
I agree about the leftie hammer loops. I used to be able to stretch to grab my hammer from the left side, but no more ( at least not easily ) . My tool belt is set up like your's with the hammer hanging on my right.
Personally, I think its a lefties revenge for all the stuff thats set up wrong for them.
I thopught we decided he looked like Ted Nugent? I've met him a couple of times he looks like neither actualy.Who Dares Wins.

or did you mean they just quit selling them as inexpensively as they used to:-) Don't worry, we can fix that later!
Well, a few years back they announced they were going to quit making them. There was more money in making "fashionable" clothes for kids, or something like that.
Everyone like me who liked wearing them went out and bought up everything they could lay their hands on in anything close to their size. I still have 2 or 3 new sets left.
From your link, I can't tell if they're the same overalls, or if they've changed them some. The "detail" link won't work in Netscape.
I might have to order me a pair and see what the deal is. Thanks for the link...Babies are such a nice way to start people. [Don Herold]
Boss
The reason that the loop is on the left is it's supposed to be for holding welding rods not hammers. At least thats what I've been told.
Dave
The real reason it's at the left is cuz I'm left handed;-) Don't worry, we can fix that later!
imported, eh - - hickory stripes, but the sizes jump from 34 to 40 - - I pulled up the 'detail' that shows the chest pockets, and the stitching is different - -
$48 - - ouch - I can get carharts for $35 - - I liked Oshkosh, and have one pair of hichory stripes left that I wear when I want to look thin(er) - well, let's make that less fat...- the buttons holding the shoulder straps were always the first thing to go -
why don't you buy a pair and post your experience ? :>)"there's enough for everyone"
IIRC the Pointer Brand were 29.00 on sale..side button holes wear out..an I ain't much more less thin than you {G}
Got storms yet..looked like you were gonna get right about NOW..
hang on there Buddy..

we just had a line move thru - we've missed the worst for the last 10 days - and this wasn't bad - a little lightning, probably an inch of rain - sky clearing in the west - strawberry patch opens tomorrow 8AM - those puppies ought to be plump after all this - - spent $1000 on fungicides in the last two weeks (not counting gas/time/depreciation), I'll have to put another round on in the next day or two - -
it is sad, trying to button the 36" waist - - my waist buttons don't wear out, I can't use them..."there's enough for everyone"
I didn't know strawberries and apples were fattining..lol
My neighbor has a patch of u-pick..5.00 a gal. I still got red fingers.
Been building rock walls all day today, using the old fireplace stone..whew. Got 20' along the drive done, and steps for wher the porch will be..I like wood a lot better..these things are HEAVY. Sweated off 5lbs. of strawberry fat.
Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

...red fingers...
that from strawberries or rock walls?
5.00 a gal.
gallon, eh...so that's 4 quart containers filled as full as you can? - - works out about the same here - .85/pound - - it looks like a grand crop, but coming out even, berries vs business is a real challenge - usually too much of one or the other - that hot morning when you set up and know there's a couple of tons that need to be harvested that day or there will be a slimy mess... ah, to have such problems! -
they are promising a pretty day tomorrow - got the Rampside fired-up, cleaned out, washed, and loaded for business - put signs up last night, so everyone could see them on the way to church and talk about it - (not a lot happens here generally) - the phone message is current, I'm not going to be able to spend much time on line for the next month -
I'm ready for a day where I make more money than I spend."there's enough for everyone"
Yer one cool dude.
Don't be square, be sphereical.

Nice thread. I taught wood shop for ten years and kids can be challenging but the payoff is watching them understand that they really can build something rather than buying it at the store. Empowerment is a cool thing.
Sphere: Not that I'm old, but Dirt calls me "Daddy!". Beyond that, I can recall sitting at desks just like the one in your photo. Complete w/ inkwell hole. And that only dates to the 1940's & 50's, believe it or not. I was in sr high school before I had a desk that didn't look like that - and I lived in the BIIIIG city
Keerful what you say to us Damnyankees - some of us married daughters of the South, & our kids have ancestors that fought on both sides. In our family, not only were they on both sides, but at the same battle. Sharpsburg/Antietum. My GGF was in the NJ Volunteers & wife's GGUncle was in the GA Infantry. Fortunately it wasn't her GGF - the man died of wounds - or I'd have wound up marrying some other Damnyankee.
Don
Well, I grew up in Pa...family arrived from Sileisa in 1734. Kinda yankee there myself.
Been below the line for about 15 yrs. now..feels more like home to me than home did.
must be a crossover kinda thing. Ya know, the war ain't over in some parts..lol.
