Scissor Truss with Drop down for 8′ Ceiling
First time poster. Looking for some advice as the structural engineer we are working with has not been very helpful (considering walking away to another). We are doing a remodel and are confused by a scissor truss that has an engineered drop down on one side where the floor plan changes from a cathedral great room to a standard 8′ ceiling for a dining room. Attaching two diagrams (before and after) to help explain. My question is – since the ‘drop down’ seems to be added on, we don’t believe that it is really carrying any load and could be removed – leaving the scissor in tact.

There is no way to answer this without all the details of the size and grade of each element in the truss. This is not added on, it was designed as a unit.
These are complicated calculations. Truss makers have computer programs that help with calculations that spit out the grade and dimensions for each element. (and the connection requirements)
Can you identify any markings on the trusses? You may be able to find the original source and get an informed opinion.
If you don't like your engineer, go get another one. (or get another one first.)
