scored a hot tub!

hvtrimguy | Posted in General Discussion on September 23, 2007 05:31am

I may me crazy but I had a customer call me to remove a hot tub from an outbuilding of his. he said to sawzall it up or I could keep it if I like. At first I thought just cut it up. It was 8 foot by 8 foot. I just didn’t want to move the thing. Then I got to thinking how nice it would be to have, DW liked the idea and of course the kids would enjoy it.
So I called him back and said I would like to take it off his hands. He said great, except the door is 6′ wide (french doors at least). I went there and looked at the situation. the doors couldn’t be removed with out a lot of labor. second the roof overhang made for a tighter fit than the door. We decided to dismantle the tub cabinet and remove all the motors and pumps. then try to get the unit out diagonally thru the doors. SOOOO CLOSE! next we removed some pvc flex tubing. EVEN CLOSER!
then we flipped it every which way. finally we shoehorned it out upside down and diagonal. At this point I was beat and sore wondering what the H*** I’m getting myself into. Well after we got it out, I called a friend to see if we could use his dump trailer to transport it to my house. he said no problem, except I have to unload the firewood I just got. SO NOW I”M AT HIS PLACE MOVING FIREWOOD. BY 6 pm we had the tub on his trailer in route to my place. not bad for a 10 hour day.

Now I have to decide where it’s going. we like the idea of putting it off to the side of the deck where no grass grows anyway (too shady). Right now it’s just dirt. I don’t want to get into the expense of a full blown patio but would like suggestions for a base to set this thing on. I don’t want to put the Pressure treated frame right on the ground (rot, bugs, etc). If I elevate it I’m concerned about mice nesting in the underside of the tub. the tub had signs of that at the other place. any suggestions?
I was thinking of a PT 4 x 4 frame slightly elevated by those deck blocks dug into the ground to level it. then using hardi backer to cover the 4×4 frame as a rodent deterent. overkill? maybe just set it on a gravel bed with some stepping stones and let the mice do whatever. it is outside.

It’s the feeling of falling further behind.”

how about a 2", unreinforced slab? should be able to do that cheaply with a mixer and ought to wear out about the same time as the tub -

I've got kinda the same possibility here - free tub, come and get it - only 400 miles away at aunties lake house - but it's still tempting -

I built a low deck on posts for a hot tub once.  Actually I "helped" build it.  Myself, I would have beefed it up substantialy, but the tub is still level.  Suckers are heavy.

I got mine about the same way. I only had to haul it down the street. I carried the gazebo by myself.( I was a whole lot tougher then.) Then put the tub on a furniture dolly and rolled it down the street. It took three of us to lift it over the fence and into the yard. I had a gravel pad leveled and tamped then put the deck that I also moved down from the other place on top of that and haven't had any problems so far. Of course I've had it shut down for about three years. Taking care of it became a pain in the Azz. I filled it up and tried it out this last summer. The pump ain't pumping so I'm selling it as is with the house. It doesn't leak though.

I got tired of everyone and their mother showing up expecting to use it. The wife would let anyone in it and they never once followed the shower before dipping rule. My brother in law was the worse. He would come down for Derby every year and every year I would tell him he had to shower every time before climbing in. I'd come home from work and there he would be fresh from golfing or hanging out at the track full of sunscreen, and sweat just soaking away. Freaking oil slick on the top of the water. He hasn't been down since I closed it come to think of it. Hmm.

PS My record is 2/3 of a fifth of Jim Beam and 4 hours in the tub. (Rookie mistake) Man that kicked my butt the next day. Slept until evening the next day. Lucky I didn't have a stroke.

LOL  seems everyone has been given a hot tub  that wants one... I've had 2 freebees and used em and tossed em both... goes in cycles i guess...

better to have nice looking friends who invite you over for drinks & a dip...

or new years eve party with 12 very happy people in a large one.... seems there were some party favors involved.... (happens to be my B-Day  so... i was a special guest...)

they are on craigs list cheap or free all the time.... think'n about one for the lake house...

a well done one I think helps sell a house.... chicks go for the kitchen & baths and master closets.... a dude sees a hot tube and thinks he'll get laid...  you have to believe sex sells...

dude have that puppy clean and working with a nice area around it when you show the house and just my bet... but.... think it will be a huge plus... vs a problem someone else has to deal with... many free ones are because they have to go before the house is listed or closed on if there are any problems at all

You are right about that. I don't want to drop the money for the motor though. If sex sells then I might just pay an Asian hooker by the hour to show the house. or maybe hire a couple for an open house.

Six hundred for the motor package brand new on Ebay. If I can sell the house in under six hours I'll come out even. I might have to dumb it down to a crack ho street walker. That will save me a bunch of money.

I'm thinking I need to get the wife to take a trip if I'm going to sell this place.

I have a motor that came with a soft tub. If it will work, it's yours, no charge (you pay shipping)

That's the whole works. I figure it's just going to go out one right after the other.
