screened porch ?what about velcro panels

Hi All you fellow builders. I’m writing from Thunder Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. I’m a custom home builder myself but this time I’m building on my own home. I’m creating a timber frame screened in porch. Timbers are up but now I need to decide on the screening. I want maximum visibility as the porch extends from several large interior windows. I need fine ‘no see um” screen for evenings but I also need a system that I can remove for full visibility and to maximize light in the long winters.
I saw a blog about velcro removable panels and wondered if anyone has used them.
Any other suggestions for screen choices?
ps. I’ve read the recent article in FHB magazine,… excellent!

They should work. The situation is similar to putting up canvas awnings on boats or tents - both Velcro and snaps are used successfully. Snaps might look better and attract less debris when the screens aren't up.
Hi Brian, and welcome to BT!
That sounds like a nice project. Hope you plan on posting some pictures of it. ;)

If you make up two sets of framed panels, one screened, the other clear plexi, you will keep the bugs out in summer and the snow, wind, and rain out in winter.
You might find yourself on that porch more in the winter when you find it mucj less chilly due to solar gain.

There are roll-up screens, but they're expensive and the housing that they roll up into is kind of ugly.
I did that on several windows for a customer a ways back. YOu can get all different color and strenght velcro rolls. The prices are crazy different. I ended up with my best deal on Ebay...a ways back

I've done several "screened porches" with windows instead of screening. This turns a 4 month porch into a 9 month porch and cuts down on the amount of dirt inside the porch.
Wait a second. Isn't a screened porch with windows a sunroom?
No, it's a "three season porch".

Yes a three season porch. In my neck of the woods a sunroom would be finished equal to the interior of the house and have HVAC.
Hi from Mosquito SK.
I have made velcro panels for a friends food trailer. Slick as frogs hair.
I used the pre-glued velcro and sewed it to the screen edges. Hook side on the screen.
glued and Stapled the loop to the window opening.
Made the health inspector happy.
Forget the one or three season porches, what's a Food Trailer? Sounds like heaven to me.
Nah, it's tornado bait. More salads get tossed in texas that way than you can count.

Is it really possible to find a screen that will keep 'no see ums' out?
Them suckers are tiiiiiny.

It was a food consession trailer and the public health lady worked this guy over pretty good. But the velcro screen with a plexi slider met the code. She even remarked how unique it was. (GLOAT).As for the tornado thing, the last good one here only damage was all my screens were missing, and vertical water marks 8 ft up on a 10 foot wall. My trees lived, the guy 4 doors down had a big cottenwood smacked on his roof. It followed the valley about 15 miles. The hit and miss was a sight on it's own.
My daughter and friend were in a tent which filled with water and hail, don't put you tent door uphill!
