This has probably been asked and answered, but: what are those screws called that are used on floors to stop squeaks–they have a sort of tripod base and this causes them to break off just under the surface of the wood floor under the carpet. I apparently recycled all my catalogs (so much for housecleaning for the new year–last time I do that!) and can’t find them. What are they called and where do you buy them? Do they work?

Squeek-No-More Carpet Kit w/ 50 screws
View Image
snm-3230 - $29.95
If you have teenagers, you may not want to fix that squeaky floor in the hallway. After all, squeaky floors can be a pretty effective “broken curfew detector†in the middle of the night. For most people though, a squeaky floor is an aggravation they have learned to live with. Squeeeeek No More can put an end to the problem with an innovative screw that locks the squeaky flooring to the joist, then breaks off below the surface. To use it, simply place the appropriate alignment fixture over the carpet or exposed wood flooring. Then drive one of the specially scored screws through the fixture and into the floor. After the screw bottoms out, use the squeak-no- more guide to snap it off below the surface, locking the floor to the floor joist. Super simple, and very fast. Carpet kits include the Squeak No More Joist Finding Screw. Made in the USA.

First response was for hardwood version and I deleted it, this is what you describe.

Now that's service! Good on ya.
Thanks for the quick reply! I used to have a McFeeley's catalog, but.... I did look at McFeeley's on line, but since I couldn't remember what they were called, I couldn't find them. Thanks again.
edit: I just ordered them and they are winging their way to me (well, in a couple days anyway). They'll be perfect--customer has squeaky floor and we can't get access in basement because furnace ducts are in way along with a door header and a steel beam. My "boss" never heard of these and told customer we couldn't help him. This should make them both happy!

You are welcome, I try to keep at least one copy of each catalog around even if it is out of date. That way I at least have the phone # to call for a new one. I try to keep most of my trade mags but am about ready to dump a bunch of the freebies, Remodeler, Qualified Remodeler, and about four others. They are nice to have to find new products though. My favorites list on the computer is almost unmanageable too.
Some Home Depots have them. The one closest to me in Almost West Virginia has them in the aisle with the wood flooring, not in the hardware section. They also sell just the screws in case you need more once you finish with what comes with the set. If you go to Home Depot, bring along the picture to show what you're talking about to the flooring folks.

OK, guys, Now tell us whether these things acrtually work as advertised and if they snag carpert fibres going in. I have done this repair with trim head screws before and have to watch carefully as I wind it in slowly to avoid creating runs thru the carpet caused by snagged fibres getting pulled. To work specifically, I would think that the threads need to be sharp enough to slice a fibre rather than snag and pull it.and what's this about "Joist finder screws" I usually have to find the joist myself and aim in that direction in order to hit it. Do rthese screws light up and glow or ring a bell when they find out they are right over the joist?

Thanks for the info--I already ordered direct from Mc Feeley's, but good to know where to look if I need more screws.
Had a fun day putting in replacement windows--and of course the two top screws go right where the pullies were for the sash weighs, so I had to fill in every one with a block of wood. PITA. You'd think they might realize that the pullies would most likely be located there. Oh, well....
