I currently own a Bosch Rotary Hammer drill, and am considering buying a second one. The drill I currently own uses SDS bits. Several of the drills I have found online use “SDS-Plus” or “SDS-Max” bits. I have not found any information regarding the similarities or differences between these SDS variations. Since I would rather not buy duplicate bits, I was wondering if these different versions all fit in the same chuck, or is each specific drill limited to SDS, SDS-Plus or SDS-Max bits? Thanks.

I THINK SDS plus is theas same SDS. I'm PRETTY SURE SDS Max won't go in a SDS chuck. I have a Bosch Bulldog & it won't take the MAX bit. I don't remember why, it's been awhile since I bought the wrong thing for it.

Joeh,
You are right sds is sds plus. Sds max has a different configuration of slots and grooves on the end of the bit. Sds max allows for a little more power transmission over sds to the bit, more torque so to speak. And spline drive allows for more over sds max. Generally you will find that for sds max and spline drive hammers, the maximum hole drilling capacities will be larger than for plain sdsplus. Also I think sds max allows for more positions to lock a chisel into.

One thing I forgot earlier is that if you find a sdsmax drill you like , you can usually get an adapter to allow you to use the sds bits in the new hammerdrill. Another item some people don't know is available, is an adapter that goes in the sds drill and allows you to thread a half inch three jaw chuck on the other end, to accept big holesaws or woodbits, or regular masonry drill bits. You cant use the three jaw chuck in the hammer mode but it is still useful.

Ya hit on something I've been wondering for some time... Where do you find the adapter you mentioned?
pretty much where ya find the sds bits.
it's just an sds shank....with about 3/4 inch of threads on the end. Only about 3" or so long. Usually about $20.
the just geta decent 1/2" chuck and thread them together. That's another $20.
both DeWalt and Bosch make the adaptor. I got mine at a Black and Decker repair shop...my Dad got his at HD or Lowes.
Not that hard to find if you ask around.
Biggest use I've come up with......drilling and driving hex head tapcons
I chuck up a 1/4" hex head driver....then drill....switch in the hex driver..drive....switch back and drill.....makes for fast drilling and driving.

Saw one in Lowes yesterday. Came in a Bosch package, sells for $49 I think.
yeah, Bosch packages the adapter and chuck together. I bought my adapter on a sale at Black and Decker for five bucks and got a 1/2" chuck cheap for another five.

Thanks guys. I'll have to get myself one of them...
sds and sds max are totally different. sds is for smaller hammerdrills. For under 15/16. SdsMax is the larger size rotary hammer drills prices start at 600$ Canadian and up. Also spline is used in dewault as bosch and hilti use sdsmax. As far as I know there is no difference in torque.
