My work has taken me to the horizon of 1.5-inch drilled holes in concrete. This has pushed me into a new realm of hammer-drills in which SDS-Max (SDS-Plus) and spline drives thrive.
What are the pros and cons of the two drives?
I also remember from an ancient Breaktime post that there was a statement made that the spline drives were going away…to be replaced by SDS-Max. I am not really seeing that but haven’t confirmed it one way or the other.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Drills of this capacity are a sizeable investment and I want to do my homework on this one. Thanks.

I bought the Hitachi DH38YE from Home Depot for $398.00. I don't think you'll find a better tool at this price. Spline drive, bits readily available. Plenty of power. I've been using it to drill holes in concrete for rebar, breaking slabs and cutting out sections of foundation. Breaking the 8" wall was slow but effective.
