Sealing End Grain on Mahongany Decking?
Hi All,
I have been building a floating deck for my home and I am just about at the “decking” part. My wife and I have decided to use 4″ mahogany for the decking, but I recently found out it would be coming in lengths other than the 16′ I had anticipated (between 8′ and 16′) so it will have some butt joints in the decking.
I’m curious if there will be issues with rot and water absorption at the joints? I know end grain is exposed even in full runs, but I’m concerned about pooling water on the joists causing issues. I come more from the woodworking world so I have in the past sealed the end grain of outdoor furniture with epoxy to keep it from sponging up water, and i’m wondering if there is something similar that should be done here, or if i’m over thinking this.

I just finished up building a cedar enclosure for an outdoor shower and I used Anchorseal on the exosed ends (its a water based wax sealer) its super easy to apply and cleans up well.
I have used Ipe Seal from DeckWise. Have not compared it to anything else.
You must coat the cut ends of mahogany. Usually a wax based product is used, same ones as for Ipe. THe precut ends will likely be treated already.
