   Interesting, I just had a conversation about this with a Hi-Macs(think corian) installer. I'm not really too big on granite. I prefer corain type counters. Why do I want to have to reseal my counters all the time?

   He simply replied, "Have you ever seen granite in a hospital?" They hold germs.

   Susan,

     Most Granite doesn't really need sealing.  However some of it can be relatively pourous and then sealing it makes sense.. I am willing to bet that much of the idea of sealing granite comes from marble which is easily stained if used as a counter..Hence the sealing..

    In my youth I cleaned a bakery which had a large slab of polished granite to roll out the dough on.. we used some pretty powerful cleaners on it but nothing seemed to phase it.. in the years my grandfather and I cleaned it it was never sealed and nobody mentioned ever sealing it..

   the first time you seal your granite,you will think "what was all the fuss about" it's way easier than waxing the hood on your car. you take a small rag wet it with the sealer and wipe the top down just like you do every day with a wet rag. let it set for   maybe 10 minutes and wipe with a clean rag and your done.

   my wife loves the look after it's sealed,she seals our granite maybe every 3 months just  so "it's pretty" but i think they say once every year or so.maybe outside every 6 months,but it will be there forever try that with solid surface exposed to the elemnts for 15 years,i bet it will be pretty dingy. larry

   hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.

   Granite is less porus or more dense than Marbles,slates,limestones, but  regardless ,all natural stone should be sealed, and resealed every few years.  Granite not sealed can change colour over the years and you cannot get that colour back.  I have the densist granite in the world on my floors and counters, even being in the industry  knowing that they needed sealing I didn't seal them, now after 13 years the stone has darkened due to air quality, usage.  It is recommended that every natural stone be sealed  once the product is sealed it will not absorb everything we have in the air along with everything that is spilled on it.  It only takes a few minutes to wipe the sealant on and then wipe if off again.  Do the bead test again and you should be able to see the difference .

   Hey.

   Depends on the state you're in. In CA, it all sucks.

   As with any VOC product with serious toxins, the nastier it is, the better it works.
