Security Systems

seeyou | Posted in General Discussion on March 1, 2009 02:46am

I’m in the market for a home security system. ADT and Sonitrol are the major players here. Any tips, suggestions, etc. when talking to the sales people? Any familiarity with either of these companies?

I think Gunner prefers Smith and Wesson !

      I like Remington.

Seems some of the locals seem to prefer ADT.

No first hand experience with security companies.

ADT= Another Dumb Tech. Sonitrol is for losers. I've dealt with both of them and they are Morons.

The problem is the price. If you let them lock you into a monitoring agreement it's not too bad. But then you have to pay like twenty bucks a month for monitoring. And monitoring isn't worth it if you have neighbors. Put your siren on the outside of the house and the neighbors will hear it fine.

There is a guy that works in Lexington that does good work. I've seen his commercial work anyway and he was pretty sharp. And a nice guy to boot. I can't think of his companies name now to save my life. I'll try to dig it up.

I don't think our guys travel that far to do residential that cheap.

A Rottweiler would be a good choice.+1 here on not choosing a contracted/monitored service.I would get get my own in house system and yes, a nice loud siren under the eaves outside.

check local statutes. it is illegal to have an audible alarm system in the city of baton rouge that is not monitored. a neighbor's unmonitored system tripped once when he was gone for 3 days.

      1. jayzog | Mar 01, 2009 06:24pm | #11

That happened to one of my buddies. I was with him when he removed his neighbors siren from the ground with his 12 guage.

He never got in trouble for it, but that was 25 years ago, things were a little different then.

when I sold Rollins, Guardian was our main competition.

at that time, for residential ... they sucked. Absolutely worthless.

it's been a while, but wireless was gaining in popularity and reliability. Most likely it's even better now.

real security means full perimeter. Every door and window armed on the first floor, obvoius points of entry on other levels.

Guardians deal then ... and I think still now ... was to sell a basic system cheap and charge for the monitoring. I do think monitoring is important, I wouldn't count on my neighbors to dial 911 if someone was really trying to get inside my house.

But their basic system was/is ... front door, back door and "a main central area" motion detector.

Usually they'd wire the doors, then set the motion in the first floor hallway.

Most houses ... that's not enough. And like I used to tell potential customers ... if I know where they install their equipment ... don't ya think most thieves do too?

anyways ... to keep someone ... like a teenager inside.

I'd go to radio shack or find a wireless system on line. But the stuff to do it right, just not top O the line. Get enough sensors for the first floor doors and windows, maybe one extra for that special teen's window ... just 'cause ya love them and want them to be extra special safe. Arm any basement doors.

interior motion sensors can be a pain if everyone's not up in bed and asleep around the same time. Also a pain with pets, but different mounting can take care of most of that.

Also, a glass break sensor can cover a wall of windows, might be cheaper than arming each individually ... though someone could quietly open said window from inside, not break glass ... and slip out.

real security involves motion lights outside and trimemd back hedges and such ... less shadows to hide in. Better systems tie fire alarms into the phone system to call the fire dept if need be.

another thing I'd point out to customers ... the central. interior motion sensor goes off AFTER someone has broken into your house ... I'd rather keep the bad guys outside.

so maybe a teen BR window sensor and an interior motion in the hall outside the door would be plenty.

Around Central Texas, it's Brinks and ADT.  The largest school district in the county uses ADT.

One fellow had ADT to come and do his house.  One of the crew drilled down through the top door frame while the door was closed.  It came down in the top edge and just under the skin of the metal door; so it pooched out the metal...

Most insurance companies will give you a discount.  The amount for the Texas State Farm company is 10% off.  The catch is that the system HAS TO BE hooked to a 24hr. alarm company monitoring desk... So any savings on the homeowner's policy would be, at best, a break-even thing.  May be a good thing in this day and time....even though if you live outside a city limits and in the county, the Sheriff Dept. won't bother to come unless owner is present....
