Seeyou’s barter idea, my beach house

dockelly | Posted in Reader Classified on March 25, 2008 03:19am

As many of you have seen, Grant was inspired to post a labor exchange based on our upcoming project. To be fair, it Was DonK’s post about the house he was debating saving that prompted me to ask for Grants help.

So I’m making the same offer to all on this board, if you would like time at my house in beautiful Surf City, NJ one block from the beach, lets talk.

The deal is simple, I pay for all materials (unless you got stuff lying around your willing to donate)and you supply the skill. I’ll help as much or as little as you prefer. So far I have the metal roof install being done by Grant, drywall by a guy from Craigslist, and Shep is doing all the window and door molding inside, as well as deck railing (although he doesn’t know it yet, can’t wait for him to read this:))

I still need the roof tear off, sheathing as necessary, and underlayment installed, landscaping, irrigation system, house painted, brick veneer applied to foundation, insulation to name a few.

I plan on doing all this stuff unless someone wants to trade time at house for labor. Get back to me if your interested.

Thanks
Kevin

That's a good idea, I've got a crib in the Hamptons, but it's all done except for landscaping.

I posted on Craigslist in the barter category and have had lots of replies. I've noticed lots of others posting now offering the same thing.

LOL called 30, no BS, 30 plumbers, had 15 call back and got 3 prices. Agreed to one and guy never shows. Did it myself just to keep the project moving. Can't really blame them, wasn't easy work. Plenty of easier jobs on the island.

I hear you. I was very lucky on the subs. Had about 4 or 5 each bid. Guys I chose were all top notch.

My mom and dad are Irish immigrants. The reason I tell you is their thick brogue is hard to understand by my friends. I've been told I can not be understood by my friends when speaking with them. Brought a friend of mine to Ireland years ago, stopped in a pub early in the day, when the old men drink. I had a conversation with two guys in their 70's, WWII stuff, how they served for USA, etc. My buddy chimes in saying he didn't know I spoke Gaelic (Irish). The three of us looked at him with dumb expressions, we were speaking English the whole time. You come do the brick, I'll make sure you feel welcome. It's an Irish thing.

    other trim, cabinets, tile work?

    sounds interresting.

we were planning on skipping Wildwood this summer and do a whole summer of small camping trips ... which we made zero last season.

    but ...

    interresting.

and closer to the beach than any PA campsites!

plans for any crown in that shack?

that shack? heh now! I'm sure I can think of something for you to do. I got it, get the recipe for Red Stripe and start brewing. You can put some crown on the bottles if it makes you feel better.

You just knew I was gonna read this thread, didn't you LOL

I can be bought for a beer and a round of golf. My loving wife, on the other hand, has different expectations on what she expects me to bring home. A score card isn't high on her list. <G>

But I'm sure we can work something out. Besides the trim, I'd love to spend a day as Grant's helper. I've never done any metal roofing.

"I'd love to spend a day as Grant's helper. I've never done any metal roofing."That is a big part of it for me also, I know we'll be a couple of gofors but cool just the same.

Surf City, where there's two girls for every boy?

I told Grant before that I'd lend my inconsiderable talents, and I'll restate that here. Think he was talking about a sometime in May, but I'm pretty flexible.

    Kevin-

I've been working on a new house in Beach Haven- 8 Ohio Ave. (aka 128th St.), over the past year or so. I'll be there tomorrow. Its finally been sold, so the builder's trying to finish things up.

What's the address of your place? I'd like to drive by if I have time and you don't mind. Scope out your work to report back to the guys <G>

BTW, how's your mom doing with the pacemaker?

    1. seeyou | Mar 26, 2008 02:56am | #20

I'd love to have Shep and Steve (Fatroman) lend a hand on the roof install. I'm saying this in public because I've made a tentative deal with Kevin to do the roof. My plan is to fab the whole thing and bring it to NJ. Kevin was going to assist with the install. Two men (if at least one of them is experienced and everything is bent right) can install that roof in 3 days, assuming proper weather. A third person can speed them up a little, but not much. Any more than that and it becomes a seminar.

So, I guess the question to Shep, Kevin, Steve, and anybody else involved, is "Are there several projects that can be done at the same time and make this a 'work fest' where we bring this cabin back past it's former glory during the day and have a little fun in the evening"?

Kevin's in charge here so he needs to make the deals. Not trying to put him on the spot, but just replying to the guys that said they'd like to help with the roof.http://grantlogan.net/

But you all knew that.  I detailed it extensively in my blog.

Well you can't go to Jersey without getting some beach pizza, that's for sure. I spent a lot of time as a kid at Ocean City, and long before I was around my mom's family was going out to LBI. Brant Beach I believe, but I think they moved around a bit. So I'm excited just to see the area again after far too long.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Not putting me on the spot at all, appreciate your interest in helping me with other aspects of the job.  You and I need to firm things up, what time you want to use the house, stuff like that.  I'm hoping to use it for 10 days, say August 10th to 20th.  After me you have any dates you want.  I think I promised you two weeks.  I have a drywall guy I will owe a week, after that it's first come first serve.

        Thanks for rallying the troops!

      Hey Shep,

House is 111 11th street in Surf City.  When you get on the island you make a left on the boulevard, go about about 15 blocks and make a left on 11th, fish store next to my place, Blue Claw. Surf City Hotel is on your right about 2-3 blocks before my street.

If your working in Beach Haven, you make a right when you get on the island, I'm in the opposite direction, due north.  I'll be there all day Thursday.  If your going to be there than as well, I can give you the nickel tour.

Thanks for asking about my Mom, hip replacement, and doing well.

Thursday I'll be working at this guy's "real" house, in Colts Neck. I'll be starting a raised panel wainscote for his 2 story foyer.

His foyer is almost as big as my entire home.

Your mom had a hip replacement? I could have sworn it was a pacemaker. But that's why I have to write stuff down when I go to the lumber yard- CRS.
