Depends on the reason they failed it. Did they say why or ask you to call them. Also depends on your system configuration. Hard to say. Here in Cincinnati we get system inspected every 3 yrs. I leave extra light chlorination tablets in plastic bag. Incase in system ones gone. They love that stuff, and will put in system while they inspect. Need more info!
As previously stated, it depends upon WHY they failed the system. It would also help to know where you are geographically.
If you are the seller, and this inspection was included as a contingency on a sales contract, the next step depends.
you could find out what is wrong and fix it (could entail a new system or major components) anything with digging involved will also mess up landscaping.
Or you can offer to reduce the price and let the buyer deal with it.
Or if they just want out of the contract and this is an excuse, might be better to let them go and look for another buyer.
Or you can say take it or leave it. depends on the property, the market, and other items of interest (like are you tired of dealing with this)
If you are the buyer, the shoe is just on the other foot.
If the septic inspection involves a zoning or other authority, it might have other impacts. (like make you hook up to a sewer system)
Many reasons will fail a septic inspection:
1. The baffle needs repairing
2. Tree roots are damaging the soil around the drain field
3. House drains are emptying slowly or not at all
4. Sewage backs up into the house
5. The grass near the septic tank is greener and wetter than the rest of your lawn
