Hi All.
I’ll admit to a fascination with the principles of sharpening. But I don’t even come close this guy. He’s built an impressive body of knowledge, and some REALLY good, inexpensive methods for sharpening hand tools.
Site navigation is a bit odd, but there is plenty of good info if you dig.

Just as well...I figure most of those guys should be familiar with sharpening methods for planes and chisels. The big appeal with this guy's approach is that:1) He backs it up with some pretty irrefutable evidence from microscopy, metallurgy, and wear testing. (If you're willing to dig through the website.)2) You can create your own jig and sharpening system for about 20 bucks, plus a bit of time.3) Sure, you can spend hundreds on retail sharpening gear, but I doubt you can create a more durable, reproducible edge than what he indicates.Scott.
You can find Lots-O-Info about that old method of sandpaper/sharpening by Googling......Scary SharpWhat's Old is NEW again..........
Update to all... (including IMERC)This may explain why Knots was unresponsive:http://www.finewoodworking.com/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesPDF.aspx?id=25403He's a published author in FW mag. (duh, I should have suspected this)In my opinion his research is beyond reproach. I'm currently stoked with building one of his jigs.He responds quickly to emails, and is receptive to comments, as long as time isn't wasted.Scott.
so, did that thread go against the purist's grain at the same time???

Never did check. I figure if they've got an axe to grind (bad pun, I know), then they can take it up with Brent.Scott.

Funny you should post this today.
I was sharpening my kitchen knife and my pocket knife today.
I have stropping board I use that needed cleaning up so I got it going and stropped both of them.
Razor sharp in no time. Easy, cheap, and fast. What's not to like.
PS I can shave with them. And my hair is old and hard.
