Hi all,
I’m looking at purchasing a 12″ jointer that weighs (supposedly) 1900 lbs.
My woodworking shop is a 12ft x 24ft polebarn with 4×6 posts buried in the ground. Its has a 3/4″ plywood floor over joists. I think the floor joists are 2″x10″x12ft on 16″ centers (a portion of the floor I installed with 12″ centers).
I’m curious if my floor would hold anything this heavy? Or if it could be beefed up to hold it (without pouring a concrete floor)?
There is already a tablesaw, bandsaw, drill press, lathe and other various tools in the shop.
Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dennis

Probably about 4"
Been there, done that
I've got a 12" jointer in the back of my wood shop that's on 2x6 joists. But it's sitting right on top of a mid support beam over numerous posts. The jointer I have is an American that I figure weighs easily 1900#. So there are ways to do this.
I restored my machine and never planned on leaving it where it is but it's been there over 20 years, i'm not saying the floor isn't deflected but it still seems ok. I just put the finishing touches on the restoration a couple months ago and have outlived my need for the tool so it's for sale if [haha] there is anyone out there in the market. About 96" bed.
Regardless of the strength of the beams, 3/4" plywood is not strong enough over the long term. You should at least double it up under this thing (and out about 4 feet in each direction).
Thanks
DanH and oldhand,
thanks for your thoughts. Where is your jointer that’s for sale? Maybe it’s nicer than the one I’m looking at.
location...
American 12" jointer is located in north central Arkansas.
A bit far...
Arkansas is a bit far of a ride from Jersey. Thanks for letting me know though.
