Hello
I want to put on an addition for a sun room. Want to have a shed roof. What is the best way to put this on, just extend roof line from the existing roof, from soffit, or install ledger beneath soffit for the roof joist support? If going from existing roof, do I fasten the new rafters to the existing ones , or just fasten em to the existing exterior wall top plate? Thanks for your imput. The new roof will be 14′ long, metal, insulated.

Great question -- I have a similar problem, but haven't posted yet. Can I learn from the answers to your post? Problems I anticipate:
1. The pitch of the roof will depend on how it is tied in to the additional structure (to existing rafters or below them) and this will affect type of roofing possible (e.g. not shingles if it isn't pitched enough).
2. Opening up existing roof to attach new rafters sounds scary and will result in period ehen house interios is exposed to mosquitoes, etc.
Is this a hijack? If so, I apologize.
One thing to keep in mind with a shed roof addition is that it can be no higher than the rafter tails of the existing roof, and, since it must slope downward, it can end up quite a bit lower. Before you get too far along, verify that this won't be a problem for you (or a code issue for the inspector).
An alternative is to add a fake dormer to the existing roof, and then have the addition's roof follow the same profile, only about 8 inches lower. More expensive, but a lot nicer looking and it gives you a lot more headroom.
