I am building a small awning with a shed roof that butts into a stucco wall. The roof of the awning will have wood shingles. I’m not really sure how that intersection is flashed. I thought it was as simple as installing an ‘L’ metal under the stucco paper and laying the flat part of the metal over the paper of the roof. But I’ve also heard that ‘Z’ bar would work better… and that the ‘Z’ bar is installed over some 1 X material. And I’ve heard that the flashing shouldn’t deposit the water under the shingles, but over them instead. Now I’m really confused. Can someone explain how this intersection is effectively flashed? Thanks in advance.

The L flashing is installed after the shingled roof is on.. It covers the top course and runs up the wall behind the building paper, mesh and stucco.
You have it right about getting it in behind the housewrap under the stucco.
But you shingle so that at least one shingle is under the flat of the flashing so water is kicking out to run down over the shingles. Then you can run the final shingle over the metal for looks if you like. I prefer having the shingles all under the metal.
