Got to put in two pocket doors for a remodel, one 2-0, & one 2-4. The 2-4 is between a BR and bath, with a fairly heavy lighted mirror (50 lbs +/-) to be attached to that wall. The other wall will have a linen closet built in and supported by the floor.
I have the Johnson #1500 assemblys, but after looking at the metal clad split studs, I don’t know if they’ll support the weight with out bowing. The wood in the split studs is only 5/8″, and with 1/2″ SR, I could only use 1″ SR screws. Thought about using some PL1500 and 1/2″ AC ply in place of the rock on that side. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Make sure you adhere the ply to the studs well, a good fat bead on each. Is half inch the most you can use? 9/16 or 5/8 would be better. Skim coat the ply and paint. Add blocking prior so the mirror is anchored into wood behind the ply as well. If you're really paranoid you could double up the studs with rips adhered to them. Ply and the factory studs may technically hold but by adding more you can keep the mirror from bouncing around everytime the pocket door is operated.
Just got through sketching this up, and it's looking a bit clearer. I'll have about 16" O/C between the jamb stud and center, and a little less than that to the first king stud at the back of the opening. I'm thinking that I could just rip some 3/4" ply and glue and screw it to the back of the 1/2" in the area that the mirror will be mounted. That'd run to the floor and to the header. I've got to use 1/2" ply because this is an area between two doors, with a vaulted ceiling. Real PITA. Thanks for the advice.
You could use 3/4 ply in place of the split studs. If you go your original route: I've never used the ac ply to blend into drywall but I have used mdo with very good results
I've satisfyed the need to hang heavy items from such a pocket wall in two different ways. One was to replace the metal clad studds with 3/4" plywood solid and then glue SR over it.
The other was to replace the SR with MDO as was also suggested. it has a papre face and can be taped to the rest of the drywall and skimmed out to a flat plane
