I let them hang over the hip, then chaulk a line and cut it with ahook knife

cut one side at the hip, overlap the other side. that way the sandwich does'nt get too deep.
just climbed down off the roof should of checked post earlier did a double over lap and like u said is a little thick
best case scenario, roof both sides of the hip at the same time and stagger the overlap. does'nt often happen though
