What is the O.C. spacing for horizontal furring strips used as backing for 24″ sawn exterior wall shingles? What if the shingles were 18″ long?
Would you suggest 1×3 or 1×4 furring?
The facade was done a few years ago by another, and I have been asked to finish up all ’round. The existing exposure is 7″ which I understand not to be ideal. I could shorten this to 6″ exposure for more weathertight results. FHB #102(May ’96) has great info but nothing on furring. Thanks

the spacing is the same as your exposure
*Pierre, 7" should be ok on 24" shingles--you still get triple coverage. Just make sure to keep the nails about 8" above the butt. 1x3 furring. It's cheaper :)
