Here’s a pic I took of part of a poster at my local Home Depot showing how everybody can do their own shingles. The part on the left seems to show two things that are not right … any takers?

Man, I wonder if I've walked by the same poster and never even noticed that. Who on earth let that one slip by?
nails between the upper and lower nail lines, and put the lower shingles on before the upper ones- duh.

C'mon Zak, open your eyes. The thing that jumped out at me was that he's facing down-slope. Maybe it's a flat roof. Anything more than about 3:12 and he's gonna have a hard time keeping his balance.

I guess when I did my 4:12 roof, I faced downslope most of the time. It was hot, and I didn't want to ruin the shingles. Not very comfortable though. I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt.
Oh, and if you squint right, it does look like a coil nailer, so it could be a roofing nailer- to my eyes anyway.zak

See my other posts above. Not a thing wrong with the way you did it.

Comeon you guys, three comment that it can't be done like that and I never saw shingles laid any other way for the first 5-6 years I was doing it. you gotta get out more.;)

(1) In the photo he's nailing through the exposed portion of shingle.
(2) The directions suggest nailing above each tab slot rather than to either side of slot.

How come he's standing above the shingles? His backs gotta be killin' him and what kinda roofing gun is that?? Looks like a Ryobi brad nailer...lol

Looks more like a staple gun to me! Nailers I've seen for roofing nails all have big round coil holders. Do roofing nails come in sticks?
It is a pretty funky cartoon drawing, - artist conception and the artist probably never laid a shingle in his life, but could have been working from a photo or two, and not paying attention to details like where the nail should be going. In the south, it is impossible to walk on the shingles to work from below them in summer, so we always worked from above. You get in shape with healthy quads and it is a duck walk. The nailer looks like a Bostich wide crown stapler to me.

looks like some of the roofs being put on around here after hail storm. buddy had a big name company do his. didn't put a ridge cap on,guess they don't do caps in mexico.
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.

I don't see anything that is right other than the safety glasses. Whoever drew the poster doesn't even know what a 3 tab shingle looks like. Where's the guy's safety harness? Hanging upside down like that certainly requires one. Oh, HD doesn't sell them so they're not applicable. But, anybody using that poster as instructions to install his roof probably has already had serious head trauma.

What's a safety harness? For shingling?
>>>>>>>>What's a safety harness? For shingling?Get a $10K OSHA fine and you'll be sleeping in one. They got one of my crews this past spring on a parapeted flat roof for not being tied off. The parapet was less than 42" tall in some places. I got a $16,000 fine. I was able to bargain it down to $1650.00 since it was a first offence. You don't see hardly anyone shingling or framing without harnesses on around here anymore. Side note: Since my guys have been wearing them, they have actually picked up speed on steep roofs. They know they're not gonna fall, so they can use both hands to work with instead of using one to hang on.

Man that really surprises me, I dont think that I've seen any framers with harnesses and with the exception of a few comercial(roofing) jobs I dont think I've seen any residential roofing jobs where harnesses were present, certainly not while I was in Texas and cant recall seeing any since I've been back in Iowa.
Is that a KY thing?
I'm gonna have to pay more attention to the guys building the frames from now on!

I have roofed from above up to a pitch of 8/12,
Maybe my center of gravity is too high, but how do you keep from falling over?

Squat real low on one leg, the other flops off to the side, then next shingle is a step back onto the other foot and switch leg to the side. not that hard once you get used to it, but you don't see many shingle layers as big as Grant either. He has more mass to move in that russian dance with each step.

then next shingle is a step back right off the edge of the roof!

Never! you are backing from the eave up to the ridge, never moving toward the edge

Yeah, I have, too, to start off, but it's uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. Bad way to show a newby how to do it. I've done a lot of things that could kill me quickly if I made one wrong move, usually in the interest of saving a buck (and usually someone else's buck at that). I want my guys working smart and safe so they're back tomorrow. Nothing kills productivity like the foreman having to take somebody to the hospital.

That describes it all!
I used to take on about 6 roofs a year for "fill in".
I had one guy for almost all the roofs I did and he could walk comfortably on any roof up to 8 or 9/12, I on the other hand put toe kicks up on anything over a 5/12 pitch. I felt that I was going to slide off and wanted at the least a toe kick at the edge for that last ditch grab-on!
I dont think my body was meant to be up on roofs, and I know my mind wasnt!
Doug
Does the poster say that you need to peel those plastic strips off the back of each shingle before you lay them?
A: Dress up as deodorant
Looks like his shingles come in various sizes and shapes.
On the right, he's putting a second layer on to cover the hole his hand is through on the first layer?
What the hell is he doing?
That's a Kmart nailer he's using.
Joe H
Good news is he is wearing safety glasses and mittens. Curious how come he's nailing through granite tiles. never seen tar paper with a grid like pattern on it. Are Those Loafers he is wearing! It's late and I've had a few...excuse my humor.
