So how do they get slate to have that gloss finish?
I’ve already sealed and no shine at all. Been warned of poly.
Thanks in advance.

Inside or out?
Old way was linseed oil.
I was on a slate floor yesterddsay at a friend's house. Asked him same question. He used oil based poly on it fifteen years ago.

Wax after...the shellac back then was not the clear, it was orange I think..which HAS wax in it..so yes, it was mixed.

What was is sealed with? If wax, you can power-buff it to a nice sheen. But I think the really shiny surfaces would have to be done with poly, which you can't do over a wax or silicone-based sealer. I like a softer sheen myself, anyway.

The big Orange box has a product from Tile lab that is a gloss finish for natural stone like slate. It'll be in flooring with all the mortars and grouts.
And now for the correct answer. :^)
Clean first with Tile Lab Heavy Duty Cleaner and Stripper. Then two coats of Tile Lab Gloss Sealer & Finish. Apply both per directions on back. We have had rave reviews and lots of questions about what we used on our slate entry.
Clean and reapply about every 18 months.
Tile Lab products are available at Home Depot.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your input, it really helps.
let's see - eighteen months vs eighteen years?Maybe it's because it is exterior vs interior. I don't know what he is looking for.But I do find that anything used on exterior slate will just rap moisture under the surface and then frost slices fragments off, powder and scaling

A mason years ago recommended Masur oil. I tried it on slate and it dried to a pretty good shine.
I'm probably not spelling it correctly.
