I recently purchased a new Rigid 6.25 HP shop vac. I have it running off of a regular 120V 15A household circuit. It works great, sucks up everything that’s not bolted down within 10 feet!
Someone recently pointed out to me though that one horsepower is 496 Watts, and with electric motors more typically at 85% efficiency, it’s more like 580 Watts per HP. That means for my 6.25 HP unit, 6.25 x 580 = 3647 Watts. 3647 Watts divided by 120V requires 30 Amps to run.
So how come I can run this successfully on a 15A circuit?
