I have a Weil-Mclain oil fired boiler 2yrs old. This winter it started shortcycling burner fan on 10 sec. burner on 5 deconds (even less) then burner fan for 10 sec. then off. It still does its regular full cycles 4-5minutes on the burner but every once and again it does the shortcycle thing. Seems tome that this is hard on the thing – any ideas thanks

I have a 22 yo weil mcclain GAS boiler.
If the burner cycle is anything like mine-
There's a flame sensor that hangs over the burner tubes. If after several (7,10,14) seconds it has not sensed a good full burn, it will tell the gas valve to close. The glow element will then heat up again, gas comes on and the cycle repeats.
Other sensors will monitor the exhaust - if some blockage in the exhaust-it'll shut it down and then retry.
There are only so many tries, then the system will lock out.
So, initially I might CAREFULLY remove the flame sensor, clean it up with some emery cloth and CAREFULLY reinstall it.
I say carefully because the very fragile ignitor is located right there also.
Check the exhaust for any blockage (snow or other)
The trouble shooting guide in the manual is pretty decent as far as steps to take.
One thing it doesn't say is to make sure the ignitor is cocked (coc'd -stupid generic word filter) a bit toward being over the burner tube. If it isn't this could also affect the operation, causing ignitor glow, but no start up.

Thanks for the help calvin, it sounds a bit complicated for a carpenter to tackle, I think I will call my oil co. I have not had the system under contract because it is so new but now 3 years old - it needs some TLC.
Being a dumb carpenter'
I'd have to agree.
and I did call.
