A first time post over here. I am a custom woodworker and do mostly furniture and cabinets and spend more time at KNOTS but a recent project was a short stairway/platform and railing that I designed and built.
I was 2/3’s of the way through this project when I found several articles-on line-books-magazine etc that describe how to build stairs and fasten newel posts etc. I would have benefited from the FHB article that just came out on the no-fuzz Newel Post, but I started this before the article was published. My self discovered techniques are probably not far from the accepted standards.
I enjoyed making this but find I really prefer building furniture-at least once the furniture is out of my shop I am done with it. If someone drops drywall mud on it or gets construction debris on I’ll probably not see it. I was really disappointed to see what happened to these pieces after they left my shop and before I was able to install them. I probably should have anticipated such events though. …
Live and learn. I’m still not finished with this room…I’ll be making two small coat closets that will flank a built-in bench. Stained and finished to match..
