RDA | Posted in General Discussion on April 23, 2009 06:08am

Evening Breaktimers, <!—-><!—-> <!—->

I know there are some excellent deck builders and designers in this community and I’m hoping you’ll all take a moment to post photos of your deck projects here.<!—-><!—->

<!—-> <!—->

There are five Strap Shot nailers to be had for the editors’ favorites (and it would be nice if at least one prize went to a regular on the forum). But, you can’t win if you don’t play. . .I mean post.<!—-><!—->

<!—-> <!—->

Good luck, everyone!<!—-><!—->

        So are we really doing that or is he gonna goof off again this year? You got a deposit check yet??

        Lemme know; I'm doing a shopping cart full of small stuff right now--the big cedar shake roof hasn't coughed up the dough for a start date yet.

        Was going to accuse you of procrastination until I realized you were in Canada. . .You'll probably miss this contest, but post your project in our regular Project Gallery as you're building. Your peers can learn something from you (and I might get some good shots to put on the home page). Good luck with your neighbor's deck (I'm guessing if you'll have to look at it every day, it's going to be really, really nice).Robyn

      I'm trying to upload one but it's taking forever.

      Nevermind, it works.  The maximum image size is 1200 pixels, not 4000 as the instructions say.

      Nevermind again, my boss doesn't want me using photos of the house with my favorite deck out of courtesy for the owners.  Dang.

        Dang is right. I bet it was a beauty. When you do post something, photos should be no smaller than 400, but no larger than 1200. Call me if you ever have any trouble; I can help.Take good care,

          Hi,I have trouble.Why no smaller than 400kb? I store mine smaller than that. Those of us on dial-up don't work in such a large world.I have posted some, but it indiscriminately locks me out at other times. I'm on my way to try it again.

    Just saw this. Here's a few pics of a deck we rebuilt a few years back. Pls. excuse the B&W photos; this was pre-digital and I shot them in B&W for use in a print brochure.

    The deck isn't fancy--an unroofed deck of 40' x 6' with a 12'x6' wrap-around to the entry side of the house--but the framing of the original decks had rotted out twice in the previous twenty years and the second time, it almost took the wall of the house with it. In addition, it's high above a sharply sloping mountainside running down to a lake, with nowhere convenient to land posts.

    So we devised a frame supported by long knee braces running back to the footings, and a 40-foot-long built-up beam that had to be assembled in situ using custom fabricated steel brackets to hold it all together. We also took measures to ensure that it won't rot out again.

          Hi Piffin,

          Thanks for the heads up!

          I've been really busy in the corporate world of BMC West. I am their "Senior Marketing and Design Rep." for the deck division. I'll get some pictures of the decks we have been building.

          I've been working 10 hours a day on a new deck display at the office as well.

          Now that the sun is finally out the phone is ringing off the hook.

          Pictures to follow. I promise.

            Stainless steel Tiger Claw Hidden fasteners are nice if you have pre-grooved deck boards but I will never biscuit joint another hardwood deck for eb-ty's.

            I prefer the Stainless trim head torque drive screws because they are better for keeping the the deck boards from cupping in our damp climate."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

            I can understand all that, but with the SS screws, I look at my own cedar deck and to me it appears that I dropped small washers that just happened to fall in neat rows.

          satire is the right word I think. Falls into the humour category, but not a real joke - no punchline.

          Robin, it's as much a joke as the thread deletions.

    Do we get to see the results of the contest?

    1. Piffin | Jun 16, 2009 02:19pm | #64

      follow the link. It's been announced over there at that page

        Help me here, which link?

        1. Piffin | Jun 16, 2009 05:11pm | #66

          Strangely enough, when I went to reply to you first time, I got bumped off here....I was refering to the first link given that takes youi to the contest.

          I recal seeing an announcement of winners and looking at the page, but right now, I don't see it there anymore and that page acts like the contest is still open for entries. Just one more glitch in the long line of site problems over there in that Gallery...
