shower base

montee | Posted in General Discussion on March 11, 2009 05:35am

I am looking for a 30 by 48 inch shower base. The big stores don’t stock it. This sounds like it is going to be a custom order. Does anyone know of a manufacturer of one? It is a small bath 5×8. Trying to replace an existing 30x 60 bathtub to gain a little space for nicer sink. Have another full bath so we are willing to live without another tub. Not planning on changing layout of bathroom or move plumbing. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

I recently got a Swanstone base pretty close to that size if I remember correctly.  It was special order thru HD and only took like a week or so.  Check swanstone's website for sizes.  Mine has the drain hole in the center - I don't know if they are available with the drain hole on the end in a smaller size than the 30"x60" bathtub replacement size.  If you can get the drain on the end it will save some plumbing expense.

Why not just make a custom curb? You might find a 32"x48", do you have an extra two inches?

Family.....They're always there when they need you.

unfortunately poor layout does not really allow the two inches because of door swing and small bath demensions. didn't want to move plumbing lines but will consider if all else fails. I have a chimney chase behind my existing tub wall which prevents me from using appx. 20 inches of bathroom space. So i am trying to work around this.

Look at the Schluter stuff. Its a bit spendy but is easy to do custom jobs.  You will have to mix some thinset and spread it, but I cant imagine an easier way to do it.

Would you benefit from dropping the chimney and installing B-vent? I did this before and gained 75% of the chimney space.

Probably would however would take some serious consideration.

          Thanks

Its been a few years, But I dealt with Laurel Marble and Tile. As i recall, they are somewhere near Atlanta.

They have numerous "standard" sizes and shapes, and the capability to custom make any size. And they can do a perfect match of the color of the tile you'll be using for the surround.

    Not cheap.

Not lightweight or easy to move.

    But quite high quality.

Marbelite, a cultured marble company available to us here in NW Oh. started a line of a couple shower bases/side walls that were meant to "fill" the space formerly taken up by a tub.  If available in your area, check them out.  I don't know if they are a national/regional company.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Hey, I loved your movie-what was it called-Full Montee?  Not my cup of tea but well done.

I looked at Marbelite's website and they don't show the tub swap option I mentioned.  However, just got off the phone with my supplier and Marbelite does in fact offer this product.  Give them a call (see site  for phone number).  Novi, Mi.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

In addition to the suggestion for Laurel Marble and tile, I'll suggest that you try to find a Wedi dealer/distributor in your area.

Wedi shower bases are made for ceramic tile to be put over them. They are lightweight and easy to work with. And you can also get Wedi wall panels that go up the walls for more tile.

I recently did a 3' X 4' shower with Wedi. Base, curb, wall panels, seam tape, drain, and urethane sealant -- total bill was about $700 (not including the tile).

And as others have suggested, Kerdi, with a foam preslope is also a great idea.

A 30 x 48 is smaller than code requirements, at least here. 32 and up....

  6. Pelipeth | Mar 12, 2009 03:10am | #13

Swanstone 32x48 in agrigate about $450.00, best prefab bases on the market IMO. They also make a 32x60 for that tub replacement left or right hand waste. swanstone.com
Set the base in structolite (something like plaster of paris) and your good to go. Any good plumbing supply house will carry swanstone, but you maybe stuck with center drain. You might also try Fiat bases if you really can't get a 32" base in. Swanstone - 800-325-7008.
