Reading the article on “Upgrading a Tile Shower” in the new FHB (#160, pp. 90) it is stated that it may be necessary to change the location of the plumbing vent to maintain a minimum distance between trap and vent. How is this distance determined, and what’s the rationale? How would the distance change in going from, say, a 1-1/2″ tub drain to a 2″ shower drain? What’s the minimum distance for various size pipe?
