I just priced a pan using the new membrane products and they look much like tyvek.
Would you pay $350 for a 5×5 piece of fibreglass cloth?
What are you pro tile guys using?
(the old builder in our place used old insulation bags…. that didn’t work too well).

That sounds crazy to me.
I was kicking around the John Bridges forum and they had a thread about Kerdi. It seems like all the proponents of Kerdi were shocked to find out that the warranty was only five years!
Whats the warranty on your $14 per sq ft material?

If there is a warranty--is only on materials and likely 1 year. Not going to pay for the travertine replacement.
I am thinking Ice and Water Shield, torch down roofing... or that new roofing that comes in 12' rolls for low slope.
It will have a slab over it...so long as it sheds moisture it will work. 18" slabs that are grouted are not going to leak much.

Are we talking about a shower or a roof LOL?I'm getting a shower pan installed right now. I guess they are big on fiberglass pans here in Austin. And it's going to cost me 350 or so for the installation. I guess they haven't heard of the Oatey membranes here. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Same concept as a roof right? just a slab of concrete held within...
So, that is the cost there for a shower pan--installed? $350... And I pay that for a sheet of fiberglass vapor barrier up here!??!?
Hmmm, I hear you guys are paying $4.00 a gallon down there now.
Did I mention that we were paying that a year ago? $6.31 per gallon in Ontario right now... WTF
I hear a rant coming on!

Yeah but you have free health care...Back in MI, we did oatey membranes. Never heard of one leaking. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
I'm not a pro tile guy, but U have done many bathroom showers. I've seen either the rubber membrane, or fiberglass.
The fiberglass seeems to be gaining popularity around here.
I wouldn't experiment much with unproven materials. It would really bite to have to rip everything apart in a year or two.
And water CAN seep thru a well- grouted floor. The cement's not water tight. That's what the pan is for.

What, no one uses lead pans anymore?...that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Have you priced lead recently?
Not me. My brother is a plumber in good old NYC and he is as old school as it gets. I razz him about the pre-soldered and sharkbite fittings and PEX.
He did put down a lead pan in my upstairs shower a few years ago. Even had CI shipped from his supplier to my house in Essex County, NJ so I did not have to listen to the toilet and shower. He did use fernco's and no-hub instead of lead and oakum, so there is hope for him....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
The problem I've seen with lead pans is that unless they're coated with tar, or something, the alkali in the cement will eat thru them.
I've had to replace a number of lead pans because of that. That's something the rubber and fiberglass pans aren't affected by.
