Side Mount Balcony Railings…post brackets how?

What’s the best way to mount the brackets that hold the posts on a side mount metal railing system? Directions recommend “Top edge of Fortress Fe Fascia Mount Brackets should be a minimum 1” from top edge of fascia board”…should it be more than 1″ (ie: cantilevered 2x10s balcony with 2×12 fascia/rim joist on which brackets are mounted with 3/8″ bolts for 2″x55” posts). Thanks
