I know, I know, the ‘proper’ way to hang CF siding is to trim first with nice thick lumber and the bring the siding up against the trim. But we’re tired of the house looking like a job site and would like to have a crew do the paper and siding now. I’ll do the trim, soffits and caulk next summer. I’ve got some nice rough sawn clear cedar already drying, so it will be stable for trim work next year.
Am I going to regret this?
Thanks,
Scott.

Plan your trim lines CAREFULLY and plumb corners with temp STRAIGHT edged stock.
It should work, but window heads need a drip cap so there have the flashing up under the sideing or remember how high to nail.
Leave room for caulk everywhere, I use the thickness of an 8D nail.
Got some places here I am doing the same.

Are you laying trim over the siding or planning to leave a perfect recess to slip it into?

Leave a space to fit the trim. The problem I most recently discovered is that the corner has a large bulge at the second floor band joist ( not my framing work), and I had to switch plan of attack and shim out the low spots to fair into the bulged area.
Meanwhile, 12 sq of siding is sitting waiting on my time to be free enough to get a solid day working on it.

So I take it that laying the trim over the siding, even with well seasoned wood, is a definite no-no.

I did it that way (what you suggested) once...never again. Did not look right and took a lot of extra time to change it.
Durn.... guess I'll be trimming like crazy this weekend....
Oh well, thanks for the advice.

Not the info you wanted to hear, but I think it will look much better. What is even more of a pain is taking it (trim) off cutting the siding in place and putting the trim back on. FWIW I use Miratec (no affliation) instead of wood. Compare the $$$.
Don't ask!!!
