Siding
Is it a (good) choice?
depends
bigger money when the neighborhood goes to shit and the scavengers come to strip it.
downside-kids that play ball or hockey.
Done right, and a long time ago much of it was, a better look and fit and finish than vinyl for sure. Once they figured you could paint if after the fact-cleaned things up real good. Holds paint well.
Expansion in the sun is something to consider.
Cost isn't low.
Repairs can be done with the right wt. coil stock.
Can trap moisture if not detailed well.
Pretty sure it's supposed to be grounded too, which I always found weird.
I get why, just saying it's weird to have to ground your siding.
That's true of any large expanse of metal on the house.
Aluminum would be at the bottom of my list, after steel, vinyl, and hardboard.
Aluminum siding, etc.
At this point, I wouldn`t touch anything made by Louisiana Pacific (read: OSB siding*) with a ten-meter cattle prod, and I'm perfectly satisfied with our factory-painted Hardiplank.
(*Interestingly, neither LP's disastrous "Innerseal," nor its replacement "Smartside" were mentioned by the OP, not to mention Hardiplank [fiber cement]).
I use mostly Hardiplank / Certainteed. It's a bit of a pain (I don't like wearing a respirator), but turns out well.
