hey all- i had a roofer just punt two weeks down the road on me. I am getting ready to do hardie on second story . im basically ready but every wall has a roof that dies into it. shed roofs onfront and back. little eyebrows on sides, and some rake soffit on upper sides. Im thinking of just screwing corner boards so i can remove later, and starting siding on second course. obviously I wont be able to blind nail bottom course once they get their flashing in. Am i missing something that makes this a terrible idea? open to any thoughts.

You should be able to install siding w/out nailing bottom course as you suggested. This is done often to keep schedule on track. In summer it’s actually our preference to do the siding first. You can wear 3 yrs off of your shingles from siders and painters walking all over the shingles with the heat of the summer sun easily. Do not install siding tight to the roof (shouldn’t be anyways). We install our siding 1 1/2” up from the roof deck which allows roofers to slide the step flashing in after the fact. This will leave 1” ish of exposed flashing when done, but this is good as it will keep siding raised from the wet roof deck during rain, snow and ice events. I would suggest you talk to your roofer just to give him the heads up, they should be okay with it, but you never know, people freak about the dumbest sh*t on job sites. We like to place step flashing bundle(s) behind the siding beforehand, so roofers can simply slide them down as they move up the roof. They appreciate that and tends to work well, but you need to confirm with your roofer if this is their preference.
