Siding Nails

Nederlo | Posted in General Discussion on November 5, 2005 01:23am

Help! I’ve run out of my favorite siding nails and can’t find a new supply. They’re 6d and 8d, hot-dipped galvanized and have a round/half-round head. I bought the originals in Princeton, NJ and now work in SW Wisconsin where they seem to be an unknown commodity. I use them for face nailing beveled siding because they look much better than flat heads.

To me, casing nails are heavy finish nails - usually 10 or 16p and HD galvanized.  Is that what you are talking about?

I was making a stab at it..never saw a button head nail so Casing was all I could conjure up in my head.  Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

      These are hand drives.

are you talking about button head nails? How many you want?

Maybe I could get my yard to ship them to you, if you want a certain amount. The shipping might be a little prohibitive, tho.

I don't know what they're called. Someone here called thought they might be nails for Masonite siding. Where is your yard? I bought them at a really great yard in Princeton that went out of business soon after Home Depot opened.

I deal with Huston Lumber. They 2 yards, 1 in Watchung, NJ, and 1 in Oldwick, NJ.

Those oval-head nails sure sound like what I call button head nails. I've used them for siding, as well as some exterior trim and fences.

I'm pretty sure they still carry them. I'll try to remember to check tomorrow when I'm there.

            Joe Glennon????  small world

I've played golf with him a couple of times!!

He used to be at the Watchung yard, which is where I knew him.

Hummm... It was hard for me to picture these "half round" head nails this guy was talking about but I definitely don't like the knurled head look for exterior finishes.

    2. Nederlo | Nov 05, 2005 04:37pm | #13

Thanks. That's my alternative here. But they're galvanized instead of stainless. That head pattern seems a little "industrial" for residential use. But they're great for double-coursing cedar shingles.

are these what you're looking for?

the box says "oval siding nails"

    1. Nederlo | Nov 06, 2005 01:10am | #15

Bingo! That's what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Where did you buy them and who manufactures them?

      Thanks again!

      1. Shep | Nov 06, 2005 03:10am | #16

I bought them at Huston Lumber in Watchung, NJ- -Hot Galv Ovalhead Siding 6d 2". They also stock 7d and 8d.

The box says- GripRite Fas'ners; distributed by: Primesource Building Products, Inc., An Itochu Company, Dallas, Texas 75006

    2. Nederlo | Nov 10, 2005 07:16pm | #17

I ended up ordering the nails this morning from Coleman-Hamilton Supply in Hamilton NJ, where, it turns out, I bought my original supply (saved a 1998 receipt). They're coming via UPS. GripRite distributes them only in their CN, NJ and PA centers. Thanks for your help.
