We were putting housewrap on our dormers this past weekend, and I realized that because the roofer used such a narrow flashing – barely two inches – the housewrap has to come down pretty close to the roof. This doesn’t allow us the 2″ clearance on the siding that Hardie recommends.
I remember a week or so ago seeing a picture of siding running right down to the roof, but can’t remember in the discussion that followed just how close most of you thought was okay. (The two inches recommended seems to leave quite a bit of exposure.)
If you think it’s really best to leave that 2″, how do you think I can cover the housewrap so it doesn’t stick out. My first thought would be to add another row of flashing. What do you think?
Thanks, Shauna

I would run a counter flashing -- 6" that will run parallel to the roof plane, 1/2" above the roof, over the existing flashing and under the tyvec(?). I would also run the Hardie 1 1/2 inches above the roof plane using a 2x4 as a guide; trim the tyvec off at the 2x4 so just counter flashing will be exposed.
