Siding -quality materials and supplie…

Dennis,
I don’t know where in the country you are located but that is not really relevant to this product. If you really want the best siding material and you are looking at residential or multi-family then the best choice is by far Fiber-Cement siding. There are several manufacturers like Hardi-plank, Cemplank and ABTco. ABTco has just been purchased by CertainTeed. This is the hands down best of all of them. After being tested independantly in a head to head comparison, the CertainTeed siding won hands down. This product doesn’t burn, is impervious to insects, won’t rot, and is the lowest maintenance available. True you have to paint it but since it has a zero linear expansion quality, you don’t paint but maybe 1/3 to 1/4 as often as you do with wood. The CertainTeed product has much less repetition of pattern and looks more like real wood. In fact once painted, you can’t tell it from real Cedar without touching it. You don’t get that from the others. It is definately the absolute best choice hands down.

*Vinyl coated aluminum(or steel) scratches real easy.We used it several years ago,the manufacturer sent along a small bottle of touch up paint with it!Now what does that tell you.It also dented and kinked easily when installing it.I realize there are different manufacturers, but what we used was not very impressive. It costs about double compared to vinyl,so if I HAD to choose between the two,I would go with a good heavy solid vinyl product.

*Thanks for all the help. I have been to ABTco website and retrieved information on proplank. I am liking this more and more and probably will waith for the shingle effect to be released.Dennis

I am trying to research siding options for a new home, does anyone know how I can figure the cost for installing fiber cement over cedar, cedar over vinyl?? I was told by the local dealer that the fiber cement was 4 times as expensive as any other siding option, is this true? Is this because the installation is harder? Any help with this would be great, as this is my first building experience. Thanks!

*I have no idea about the costs of installation, but the siding is cheap. I think I saw it for less than hardboard by ABTCo when I looked this week-end. It could be more expensive because it requiares a depth limiting pneumatic nailer to install ( according to the instructions ). But, as I am doing it myself (I have never installed siding in my life), the installation costs doesn't affect me. Good luck.Dennis

*Does anyone know if standard 2x4 construction will support Fiber-Cement siding? Does there need to be any re-enforcing? Thanks in advance.

*Our garage collapsed in a snow storm & we are replacing it. We wanted vinyl siding but our town said that is against fire/building codes but we can use aluminum siding. Does this sound logical to you? I didn't realize the vinyl was such a fire hazard. The garage is not attached to the house and is 3 feet away from another structure.

My practical side is winning today. What are your experiences with vinyl coated aluminium? What about vinyl? What are the best products and the best suppliers? Anyone use ABC? Appreciate the comments.
