I did a search and didn’t find what I was looking for, so I’m going to post a question that has probably been discussed nearly to death. (FWIW, I like the new search engine. Easy to use.)
What’s the general consensus on yard signs and magnetic signs on trucks? Assuming they are done tastefully, are they effective? I have bid on a job in a gated community, and I’m thinking about planting a yard sign while I’m working. It’s an upscale neighborhood and I’d like to get some exposure.

Can't hurt. But in a gated community I'd check if they allow it, first.

People in gated communities geneerally find that sort of thing distasteful. They can see that work is happening and will ask at the cocktail parties about how happy they are with your work or stop by the job to meet you. The yard sign is frowned on. Some places have codes that disallowit.
I think well made, attractive, yard signs are a good way to remind people what kind of work you do. I think the cheap paper ones I see tacked to a roadside tree are a very poor way to represent yourself to others.
I think magnetic signs on your vehicle are a poor method. They say "I'm in business, sometimes", or "I'd like to be in business, but can't really afford to get the company name painted on the vehicle", or "I'm in business, for a while at least". I think you'd be better off with nothing on your vehicle than those cheesy magnetic signs.
Yes, they might find the yard sign distasteful, but how does it compare to the dumpster parked at the curb?
For the yard sign, I was going to get a metal framed sign like the real estate agents use. For the truck sign, until Blodgett spoke up I was going to use magnetic letters off the fridge. My kid's done with them now, and I think we might have enough to do the drivers side :)
This Christmas season, a local upscale builder put lights on the dumpster near the road. Now, that's class.__________________________________________

Calvin, man, I'm thinkin' that a string of chaser lights around the top of the dumpster could look nice...maybe leave the lid 1/2 way open and put a flashing star up there? Maybe you could dress up the mice as elves? That has potential, man.

In neiborhoods that allow it, I put out one of the metal realtor style signs. I have a clause in my contract requsting permission from the homeowners to place it, there is also a clause that allows only our sign to be planted. I don't want a clients yard filled with the painters, fencebuilders, and whoever else may want their name out front signs.
We are currently doing a remodel in a gated community that specificly forbids the placement of yard signs. However, we have a very good relationship with the managers at the sales office and they are doing a better job of advertising for us than any sign could ever do. We also encourage the neighbors to come in for a look around when they stop to ask questions about the project.TCW Specialists in Custom Remodeling.
