it was a while back ,but at one time there was a link to a tile setting tool that used a t-band and ratchet to pull marble tile perfectly flat…
does any one remember that? or have the link
it had a button that held the t-bands longer leg compressing the corners and the centers of bigger tiles perfectly flat

I was surprised yesterday to see Home Depot has a two piece plastic thingy that does what you're talking about. The part that goes under the tile has a loop above the surface that a plastic wedge fits into. Looks simple enough. The price was something like $40 for 50 sets.
edit: now that I think of it, the minimum grout line was probably 1/8" or so.
