My 24 X16 house addition was built on partially disturbed soil (back filled, packed and allowed to settle for 4 months). Not something I would do, anyway the cement footing was poured on pilings and is OK. A floating cement pad was poured for the floor and then ceramic tiles installed. The floor has settled approx. 3″ leaving gaps under the interior walls and the tiles are all cracked. The floor sounds hollow in spots indicating gaps between the cement and soil beneath. Jack hammering is not very appealing. Any ideas on how to refinish this floor? Wood, cement… other?

I'd look into a process called slab jacking. concrete grout is pumped thru holes drilled in the floor to bring the floor back to level. You'd have some tile to repair (in way of the holes), but it sounds like the tile needs fixed/replaced anyway. Concrete pumping co's are the place to look for this task. Jim
