Ripped this out today as part of a larger reno.
The whole ‘McBathrooms” project came out of my noticing all this rot when I put in a sump system a year or so ago. Client got someone to “brace it all up fine” . . .
Luckily, I’m making all this a closet, and removing all the plumbing
Note that a joist was completely cut out for the toilet drain, and another was cut for the tub drain. House was built in ’59.
You can use a 1×4 header on 2x10s, can’t you?
Blocking has opened up; floor has sunk right at an inch under the tub
All this was still wet, and no-one’s been in there for a couple of weeks

Those are some great photos there. 1x4 header on 2x10 joists. Classic.

McDesign,
I traveled to Jacksonville Fla. to do a remodel for my Brother some years back.
Second floor bath , 2 x 8 SYP joists spanning maybe 14-16'.
Plumber had cut one completely off, notched the next two up from the bottom leaving about 1 1/2" at the top.
Brother and wife didn't want to pay to have things re-plumbed correctly so I suggested we could use a clear 3' acrylic pipe hung exposed below the ceiling level of the dining room below....
Told them it would be a great conversation piece during dinner parties.
They paid to have the plumbing fixed and floor joists replaced.
Guess there are some things you don't discuss at the dinner table.
Hey what moron put a floor joist right where the toilet goes----- geez some carpenters just don't plan ahead.
;-)
I fear no man & only one GOD. Me
some don't plan for their behinds either

When I remodeled my house I found several plumbing mistakes by "Bill" the plumber who did my house.
I know his name was Bill cause of a note he left the general in marker on the inside of a wall on the sheetrock.
I don't run into floor joists that much, but sure enough on most of my commercial jobs the architects sure have a knack for putting the toilets on grid lines----- grid lines = structural beams.I fear no man & only one GOD. Me
geez some carpenters just don't plan ahead
Great pun! "plan ahead" snork!
Be ship builders always plan a head.
I found the same stuff in my own house when I renovated before moving in.
2 of the 5, 2 X 8 floor joists had been cut completely out in the bathroom.
For the life of me, I can't understand how it stayed up?
