SIP Panels + fiber cement siding
I live on the shores of Lake Michigan (high wind and driving rain) and have James Hardie clapboard siding on my SIP panel house. I think I’m getting some water infilitration so would like to know about the recommended backing to have behind the siding (beyond Tyvek). Also, what is the recommended overlap for the siding? I have had questions about the amount of overlap and recommended nailing as per manufacturer’s instructions since installation. The siding seems to to rattle and lift in high winds. Is construction adhesive advised to seal the clapboards?

Face nail it and it won't rattle.
Since the siding is already installed, you can't go back and add nails or screws without face-nailing; it's certainly one way to do it, but Hardie documentation says you're not supposed to do *both* blind and face nailing. Face nailing is recommended for windy climes (particularly if you have the widest (8-1/4") siding). In any event, you should first read up on the installation instructions and "best practices" documents available on the James Hardie site (hhttp://www.jameshardie.com/homeowner/support-installation.shtml). The exposure for all Hardie plank designs is supposed to be 1-1/4" (according to what I see on their website), and the use of construction adhesive or caulking in the overlap is not discussed in the Hardie documents I've seen.
Hardie makes their own version of house wrap, but I doubt it's much different from Tyvek. Anyway, the siding is already on the house, so you have no way of adding new housewrap without replacing the siding entire, right?
Thanks for your reply. Since we need to remove some siding to replace windows that are leaking on the lake side we are considering removing all of it and "starting over" on that side of the house as we think that the current siding may be leaking. We want to stay with the same siding to match the rest of the house, but want to avoid the current problems we are experiencing. This may go back to revisiting the house wrap (we currently have Ty-vek) or the application of siding. Suggestions?

Is there a rainscreen detail behind your siding-this would channel water down and out if any passes your other lines of defense.
Was yours indalled over a rainscreen or directly through air barrier to the SIP?
