Interesting. It's really sorta conventionally framed, only the insulation is inserted as the framing goes together. Does avoid the need for a crane, and would work fairly well for DIY.

Probably nowhere near as strong as SIPs.

Wait'll you see what I'm using on the timber frame garden room I'm building for a customer.

The entire system puts the stuff in that link to shame (so to speak).

. There's next to no framing involved and the panels are steel reinforced and light as a feather and strong as can be. The foam panels are 5 1/2" thick. We're going to see about getting involved with this stuff I'm using. . It's being fabricated for me now and my delivary comes a week from Tuesday. I don't really need to use it for what I'm doing being the structure is open an three walls but I'm dying to try it out. After the archy puts all the measurements together for the exterior walls and roof we send those measurements to the manufacturor and they cut everything into panels and ship them to us....then the whole thing gets screwed together lickity split.

Well, the archy I hired to do my last two jobs for me ended up becoming the rep around here on LI so I have first hand info on the stuff. It's really got me psyched!

I think  it's THE best stuff I've seen come along in a long while!!! Why didn't I think of it...lol. I'd use this stuff to totally build my entire house if I build another. I'm thinking a hybrid timber frame with this stuff. the great thing is you can put the entire thing together alone (if you had to) with "ease" and have a totally super insulated house!

OK...so I get to know the stuff real good...move to the Western NC mtns and start up a biz with you using this stuff...lol. I noticed several people in NC have already used it.

It does look like there's a dealer in NC, with all those jobs here, but hell if can tell<g>The idea seems great, but I have a lot of questions that could have been answered by some better pics... so, it's up to you Baba Foam Dass!It also looks like something two old farts could pull off... as long as a big wind didn't come up. I could see us para sailing out over Maggie Valley, ha.http://www.tvwsolar.com

Roy Schmidt's the dealer right here in Hillsborough NC. question I have is how are you supposed to wire the stuff? And we know that bead board EPS doesn't have all that great an R-value. smells like snake oil to me..------------------

"You cannot work hard enough to make up for a sloppy estimate."

          5. andybuildz | May 17, 2009 08:12am | #14

It has channels for wiring or when you order it you can tell them where you want the channels..or...it's easy enough to cut the channels yourself being it's mostly foam.

I think it shows the channels in the web site

            edit:

            5. How is electrical wiring and plumbing installed in the ThermaSteel Panel?

Pre-molded electrical chases can be provided in the EPS core of each panel as required. Electricians and plumbers familiar with commercial metal stud construction have no problem with the ThermaSteel System. A hot knife can be used to form custom raceways of various configurations for wiring and plumbing.

            Hi ShelterNerd,

And we know that bead board EPS doesn't have all that great an R-value.

Agreed but the "biggest" energy value with them is complete air seal and no thermal bridging. For a DIY guy like my buddy/licensed contractor......he likes being able to raise an entire wall by himself.....he can't do that with a SIP.

He uses an awl to cut in wiring needs outside of the factory provided channels and then fills all with window low expansion foam.

Pedro the Mule - Not my style panel but certainly not against it.

I looked at some of the website. How is the exterior finished? With typical ply sheathing screwed into the metal flanges and then siding?

          8. andybuildz | May 17, 2009 02:57am | #10

Anyway you want...ply or skip sheathing or....

            same on the inside.

the cool thing is how light yet strong the panels are...not to mention super insulated.

Agreed. They have that long, tedious Flash presentation and hardly show the product. I figured it would only get worse if I punched some of the hotspots.

      Hi rez,

I second the info from andybuildz.....a good friend built his last rental duplex out of the system......his only complaint was not preparing well enough for nailing trim. He's going to do it again soon but will precut a bundle of 1/2" plywood that he'll screw to the base and around doors and windows right before drywalling......that'll give him something to nail the trim to.

Pedro the Mule - foaming at the mouth/not good...foaming at the houth/good
