I rented a car recently that had Sirius Satellite radio and thought it was so good I went out and bought a unit myself. With my techno savvy son, we hooked it up in no time, but we can’t find a good place for the antenna puck.
It’s supposed to have at least three inches of flat sheet metal around it. I’ve pretty much taken the headliner off but haven’t found a satisfactory placement. For the time being it’s on the outside of the roof with the wire simply closed in the door.
I’ve got a 2005 F-150 with a sun roof that complicates matters. Does anybody have any experience with their installation they’d like to share?
Thanks

It might not be 3", but is there room to mount the puck centerline between the sunroof and the rear window? Why not temporarily attach it there and if the reception is fine it oughta work permanently.
I tried it behind and in front of the sunroof and off to either side as well. None were satisfactory.I'll try the dash.I bought the truck used.It came with a roll top bed cover that sits behind the rear window so there is no room for a mounted tool box. I do keep two Contico plastic tool boxes in the bed, but I take those in and out so I can't mount anything permanent on them.
Funny, just had this discussion in a car forum.
Anyway, I've been told by an engineer in the industry that those little magnetic antennas need the metal backing for the antenna to work right, but it only needs around 4 square inches.
He told me the antenna for the auto and the home are the same, but the home antenna comes with the metal back built in.

Two thoughts: might not need as much metal as you think, and I'd say the suggestion to try it temporarily in one place is a good one.
Caveat: The engineer and I were discussing xm antenna's -- the sirius frequency may be different enough to require more metal background.
mount on top of your metal tool box

these two are now the same company.
I have a friend with a similar situation. Truck with sunroof.
Heput his behind the sunroof. Works fine.No Coffee No Workee!
I threw the caveat in because although I know they're now the same company, I'm pretty sure they still use different frequencies and that might affect the validity of my statement. I think it's another year or two before they get one receiver that can pick up both systems.Your friend's success is probably exactly the example needed.
I've always had mine on the dashboard and it works great. I would try it about anywher you want. If your concerend with sticking maybe try a little silicone on it.

Funny, all the stations and variety you can get but what sold me were the country selections and particularly "Willie Radio". Finally somebody understands my needs. Who needs E-harmony. I'll just take a long drive with a date and see if she likes what I like. Couldn't be simpler. Now I just need to find a place for the puck.
I was going too, but i,m not touching that one, I dont want to get banned
Willie radio is a real good one. I don't know how I ever drove so much without it. The Sinatra channel is cool too. Like Williies it's
not all about him. But it stays in that same vein.

I like a stevie rat vein
They have a channel for that type of blues. If you can't find a channel you like or that suits your taste then your cheating on the test.

Headliner? It has to be on the outside if you don't have LOS through glass.
