Sirius Reception

Treetalk | Posted in Tools for Home Building on June 17, 2009 02:49am

Weve noticed that in the last year or so and at diffrent job locations our Sirius Radio reception gets real sketchy from around 2:30 – 3:30 pm . Wondered if any one else expierenced this . Wondered if it was Atmospheric ; astronomic or something else. We broadcast the Sirius to an old blaster. Still beats those no stop car and cell phone ads.

Love my Sirius. There is no other radio for me. I'm in and out too much to notice if it happens at certain times. But it does seem to get quirky at times. I always thought of it as atmosphere.

Yes , and i've speculated ..... to myself mind you.... that it has to be with the rotation of the earth and the satatalite having to adjust itself to that rotation. But in reality i have a feeling Sirius is run still like your local jiffy lube . But in the mean time i'll placate myself with astronomical theory.... in short i'll be part of the herd ad just go with it ...... considering i dumped the four bills into a life time subscription..... i wonder about that.

I'm a lifer too. I think this October it will be worth it. That's when the lifetime sub pays for itself. I just disk' want an annoying little charge every month.

I got Sirius a while back, when Howard left commercial radio. Reception has always been spotty. I only deploy it if I am going to be on a job for more than a couple of weeks, as setting up the antennae is a huge hassle.

I am currently on a job that has a 2nd floor deck with a direct shot to Reno, Nevada. I live in the SF bay area. This is the first time that I have had continuous reception, all day long.

On another note, I have been tuning into Pandora.com on my iphone when I work. Very sweet.

They have got a sirius xm app for the iPhone now. There's also another app that will pick up a ton of stations including howard 100 and howard 101. I can't remember the name but if your interested let me know and I'll di it up.

I thought that app didn't pick up Howard, or MLB/NFL games.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

          The Sirius/XM one doesn't........

But I think there's another one that does. Heard them talking about it on the radio but didn't listen to the name.

The app advertised Howard. I'll dig up the name at lunch.

Thanks, I'd be curious to hear more. Don't care about Howard so much, but I wouldn't mind at all getting the NFL, college football, and/or the NHL games.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Fabulous! Thanks. I'll give Hay98 a try. I see they've got my favorite one from Annapolis on there, too. WRNR. I'm just out of range here.Yes, Grant is going to need an iphone, maybe before the trip begins. If it hasn't begun already. Trips never really start or stop anyway, they're always going even if we're not aware of it.And that's your deep thought for the afternoon. I know a guy that has made a great business out of setting up and leasing cell towers. He told me that satelite radio is broadcast and distributed through cell towers. I had sirius and wondered why I had spotty coverage in some parts of austin. That explained it.

  5. robert | Jun 29, 2009 01:07pm | #9

I was an XM guy before

    a. They merged

    b. I bought a new car with Sirius in it

I still have 2 XM units in other cars and I NEVER have a reception issue with them. With the lone SIrius equipped car I have reception issues around mid day, every day.

I also find I have more dead spots. Same company but two different satellites (for now anyway).

I personally was all around much more happier with XM.

    1. jimAKAblue | Jun 29, 2009 01:35pm | #10

I've got XM now and I'm not finding any dead spots either.

So i was driving home from fishing tonight, and listening Jay Thomas rebroadcast. And there was a women on from Sirius radio her name was Bridgett Neville . Who was also an engineer she said in the next couple months will sending another satellite up .That will make it a total four apparently the three travel in a big figure eight and they will send a fourth which will be positioned in the middle of the figure eight . The three will send there signal to the middle and will in turn send that signal to us. Basically sounds there trying to up date the signal power and increase the signal .By quite a bit, there was talk that people have had trouble during certain parts of the day, and certain parts of the country. There was more talk ,but came into the interview late. They also said it seems XM has better reception for some reason, so there will be gathering there technologies to better serve us.

    1. andybuildz | Jul 02, 2009 07:47am | #25

Didn't they let go of Jay I thought? I was hoping not.
Was in the middle of putting a cpl of LVL's up in my basement next to some rotted tree joists (what a nightmare of a job...ugh!!!) and the best of Howards been on. Was cool hearing Abbie inthe studio and Sam Kinisons first time in the sudio.
      Time sure flys.
PS...still working on that proposal btw, What a nightmare...soooooo much to deal with!!

Yes, I have my Sirius receiver mounted on top of my Bosch box, it gets used often. And I too have noticed that in my case, around 4PM, the signal gets sketchy. Definitely related to a regular occurrence, not a random weather situation.Jake Gulick
