Does anyone know the proper sequence for calibrating a site-level? There is a set-screw at the base of the unit (David White), and of course the bubble adjustment screw at the top of the barrel.
Having difficulty determining how to adjust the base screw to level the unit “to itself”, before attempting to mess with the bubble…

You should not be calibrating it on site. To do that, you send it back to David White.
to set up the unit for use, you secure the tripod to be firmly placed and approximately level on top plate.
After that - my memory gets foggy 'cause I have been using a laser so long now - you seat the unit onto the plate and twist it on firmly, then start to level the bubble. You align the optical to set acrosss two of the four supportsand adjust to level that way, reverse it 180° and check.
Then turn it 90° across the other two. Adjust to that position, reverse and check. Keep this up at all four positions until the bubble runs true each way without changing things.
Now use it.
BTW, the best place is near the middle of the layout to avoid compounbding optical errors. For instance, if you set up at the end of a long footer, like 100' long - where it is nearest the level, an error of only 1/8" can be off by over an inch 120' down the line. But if you are set near center to begin with, both ends are c. 50' from the level, and the error would be less than 3/8" but the same amt at both ends

Thanks for the response...Problem isn't how to set up and use.... problem is it got knocked over on a job, fell like a tree onto a concrete drive. Can't get the thing to read level around 360º anymore.Getting level across the four thumbscrews is doable, but once I swing 45º instead of 90º, it reads out. Spent two hours with it. Figured out that the way to calibrate the bubble itself is to level across two screws, then swing 180º and see if it reads the same. The only reason I can figure that the tool will read level at 90º increments all the way around, and then go out at the 45º stops, is that the vertical shaft of the machine is now warped. We'll see if ex-bosses still want to re-imburse me for their mason's big shoulders...Not countin' on it, though <G>Ciao'
i have one of those DW antiques also
same thin happened to mine and had it repaired , haavent used it in years
lasers a work of art aafter using a DW
As I was reading the clarificatrion halfway thru, I was ready to ask, "is the plate warped?"Send it in for rebuild or buy a laser self levelor

Might make a decent rifle scope. Maybe for the kid's bb gun.
