Skid steer salvage

JHOLE | Posted in Tools for Home Building on July 21, 2007 08:04am

Would anyone know where I would start to locate a salvage yard for heavy equipment?

I have an old international 3200A skid steer and would like to buy another salvage on for parts.  I assume that there is some kind of parts finding network like for automotive salvage yards but can’t seem to put my Google on the right place.

Thanks guys

The salvage places I deal with prefer to sell parts.  That's how they live.  OTOH, an International skidsteer might be something they'd prefer not to keep around.

Remember seeing some very large equipment yards on 23 in Michigan, but don't remember how far N they were from you.  Not much of a network that I've discovered.  Other than searching the internet and collecting phone numbers.  Which I'd be happy to share, but they aren't anywhere close to you.

http://www.wengers.com/ are very good folks, been around for a long time.  Might have a referral for you.  I notice International wasn't even listed as a skidsteer possibility on their website.

    Good luck.

I was thinking the same thing as far as them selling it. - I can't imagine there are too many of these things left so their customer base for this unit is nil, might as well turn it into cash or roll it into a unit that there are larger numbers of.

HHMMMM 23 huh. I don't remember that. I know that there is one on 75 somewhere around 190 mile mark - have someone checking on that tomorrow. I am going to have to find a way to check out 23 or find someone who travels that road frequently.

Wish I could find an association or network.

Recently looked for a pinion shaft for an elderly Cat, long since dismissed by Caterpillar.  Found a new one in Tennessee.  Had to ask how thick the dust was.  Guy quoted me an unbelievably low price, $150 over used price I got from Wenger's.  Turned out he offered it to me at less than half the original price.

Same deal, not many opportunities to sell it and he had a live one on the hook.  I took the used one, but he later sold me a bunch of other (new) items.

Junkman and I drove the same road.  I continue north of Saginaw.  Only once each way/yr so I don't remember quite where, just that I wished they were near here.  Looked exactly like the yards you need.  Not organized, with parts already on warehouse shelves.

The other possibility is visiting internet antique machinery forums and advertising your interest.  Very long shot, but the price would be right.  There's a group for every obsolete tractor I've looked for.  And a large amount of expertise waiting to be tapped.

Guy in SE Australia just snail-mailed some photocopied technical info on one of my obscure Cats.  Dealer-only literature.  They were tickled when I posted photos of what I'd been doing.  Very eager to help me get back to work.

        Good luck.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!

I gave my 3200a away about 7 months ago. Where were you then?

For the last 4 years I drove from Texas to Iowa regularly and in the state of Kansas along I-35 there is a salvage yard that has to have one of everything imaginable in it, mostly heavy equipment/construction equipment, not much in the way of cars and trucks but machinery for the most part.

All I can remember is that its in the southern part of Kansas but if they don't have it I can imagine anyone having it!

Maybe someone from Kansas that's on here would know what town its located in or you could Google something - not real sure but I know the place is there.

I know this ain't much but.........

i live here in the oz state. from wichita south to okla. theres nothing, the only one i can think of is up by ottawa,ks. has about a 1/2 mile of old big trucks and semis parked along the highway fence. about 40 miles south of k.c.north of emporia 50 miles.

i swear those trucks have been sitting there for 20 years, nothing every moves, but think what they are worth for scrap iron now!      larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.

      1. DougU | Jul 22, 2007 05:36pm | #15

        Larry

Maybe that's the place. As I drove past that place for the last 4 years it has grown 4 or 5 times its size.

Yea there are a lot of trucks/semis but there is one hell of a lot of construction equipment there - fork lifts, back hoes...........

Your probably right about the location, no offence but as your probably already aware, Kansas doesn't offer a  lot in the way of scenery along I-35! I was thinking more south but the drive through just seams to be all the same no matter where I'm at.

I always wonder what these people are thinking - if there not selling the stuff for parts then sell it for scrap, not going to get any better then right now - turn that metal into cash, much easier to maintain! I see farmers doing the same thing, park the old pieces of machinery in the back forty to rust to the ground. There are only so many parts from that old 1963 combine that are going to be usable in the future!

Thanks, I would rather not drive to kansas, but maybe someone will have some contact info or something to get my foothold for a search.Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City

The three I know of are near Huntington Ind,  on 23 between Ann Arbor Mi, and on I-75 near Saginaw MI.

Insert initially amusing but ultimately annoying catch phrase here.

Excellent. Close to home. at least I know that there may be light at the end of this tunnel - now if I could find the damn tunnel entrance.

I looked for salvage parts for my Cat V50B without much success. There were some places in my area that rebuilt old forklifts that would have sold me parts except that they didn't have what I needed. I checked out local equipment auctions and some forklifts went pretty cheap, except I didn't spot a V50B. There are some things like the "Nickle Ads" that are papers that are just classified ads that occasionally have something for a reasonable price. They also have listing on-line, but they may limited to the Northwest. http://www.nickelads.com/

There are also some used equipment dealers that occasionally, if rarely, get something that is non-running.

      No luck with those.

I would consider a windsurfing trip to the Gorge if I found one out there.

Locally there is a large salvage operation for "yellow" machinery.  Most parts are inventoried and available by make, model and serial number of the original machine or by your machines ID.

Schaeffer Enterprises of Wolf Lake, Il   618-833-5498.

Give them a ring on Monday...............Iron Helix

Most cat dealers run a sideline of cat salvage.  I know the dealer I used to work for did and I think I recall seeing a V50 there..  Contact Ziegler in  Minnesota

Have you looked at Ritchie Bros Auctions?  http://www.rbauction.com/ I've seen everything tractor related go through the local site.
