I just aquired a nice Skil Saw model 127. The big one – 12″ blade in a hand held saw.
I was wondering what a very good alternative to the Skil lubricant would be for use in the worm drive gear box.
Any other tidbits about the saw would be cool too. I wonder how old it is.
I am thinking this saw would be great for gang cutting rafters and such.
Thanks

Is there a particular reason you want an alternative to the worm drive lube? My local Sears store carries it and its not that expensive.
I agree with the other poster... why mess around? Skil wormdrive lubricant is easy to come across and pretty cheap.
Where did you come across this saw, if you don't mind me asking? I search high and low looking for older Skil wormdrive models and they're pretty hard to come by in operating condition for something other than an insane price. Sometimes if you want a particular saw, you have to buy several broken ones and 'build' an operable one out of the parts. A big one like the 127 is a very nice find.
And keep me in mind if you ever decide to part with it. ;)
I guess I was wondering if a premium synthetic 90wt oil or something might actually be better. I will get some next time I see it on the shelf.I got it from a storage closet at work. It has probably been unused in the box for well over 15 years. I actually have the original manuals with it too. Rather nicely "presevered" as the tube of lube leaked all of its contents into the bottom of the storage box.I have not yet plugged it in and tried it, but I will do so soon. I wanted to get some oil in the gearbox 1st.This thing is massive and probably eights over 20lbs. Well built, but it looks like the seal is leaking.I wonder how I can tell the age? Did the older ones have a leather seal? Obvously it is pre-asbestos ban as the manual details procedures for cutting the panels.I also wonder about a source for a new seal. I am very mechanicaly inclined and may decide to take it apart. Would it be a regular lip type seal?Serial# is A63178Edited 2/25/2006 8:59 pm ET by sbowmanEdited 2/25/2006 9:01 pm ET by sbowman

I don't know enough about them to tell you it's age. Can you post a picture of the saw?
Cutting asbestos panels with a circular saw........ Good Lord. I wonder what things that we work with today will we look back upon and cringe at? My best guess is the new acq PT, but who knows?
That's a real good find you've got there. I don't know what it's worth, but just for the sake of collecting, it's a nice piece. I've got a few old shiny all metal circular saws that I'm going to make a case for in the office I've yet to build..... someday. I don't have any worms yet as they're hard to come by and often pricey, but I do have an old PC, a nice old Craftsman that I don't think was ever used, and a few others. View Image

Hardi products scare me the most. The dust is super fine, and I see guys cutting it all the time with no mask.My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
I'm thinking Hardiboard might be the least of your worries. ;)

I had pizza for breakfast, so that balances it out.My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
No pictures right now.I got a little carried away and the saw is totally disassembled. Good news is the two leather seals have #'s on them, so I should be able to cross them over to new ones.Bad news is the bearing on the guard is locked up. I have it soaking in kerosene right now in hopes it will free it up. Funny thing is there is no rust visible. Just old gummy oil and saw dust.My only real long term concern about this saw is the insulation on the windings. I hope it holds up.I made a mistake on the serial#. I should have typed A13678.

Manual
You want to sell a photo copy of the manual if you still got it?
OOOPS,
I just drug about 100 pounds worth of old SKIL parts to the dump about two weeks ago. Haven't had much use for them as of late and never really thought they were that rare or worth much.
Probably could have built three or four good saws out of what was there if you had a bunch of good brushes.
Kept the old all metal one I bought from my dad in 1982 right after it's third or fourth rebuild.

I have the same saw , my ser#is 105868 , it works great love this thing, picked it up about a week ago , was in a old wood work shop, there's a lot of old tools in there I'd love to have.i seen some pictures on here and his 127was only 115 volts, wondering why mine says 220 volts ac or DC single phase,
I live in Australia and can't purchase worm drive oil here and I use transmission oil in my saws (have 4 of them) which happens to be 90 wt
Is the 127 a worm drive? If so, 90-105 SAE Hypoid gear oil. Make sure it's Hypoid type for any worm drive.
Most automotive rear ends are Hypoids, so if it's rated for that use...

Several days ago I went to pawn shop and looked around and found the tool section and saw wrenches, torque wrenches, circular saws, palm sanders, etc.I did not see any old power saws. The majority of the tool inventory was air powered nail guns of all sizes & types.I noticed the used tool prices were about the same as what you would pay for new. Needless to say I didn't buy anything..++++++++++++++++

skilsaw Model 127
Eat your heart out. I just bought a Skilsaw model 127 in good working order with the metal carrying case at a flea market. The guy said this was his last weekend there since he wasn't making enough money to justify the booth. He sold it to me for $20. He told me it was 10 inches but after reading the post I measured it. It's a 12 incher.
I also got a 32 inch Ridgid pipe wrench from him for $10.
skil model r 12" worm drive

Skil Saw tools
I just got 2 old Skil tools and need more info on them, they both work well (127 12" worm drive saw & 323 belt sander) and got them dirt cheap! I live near Portland Oregon and any info or sources would be appreciated. The sander runs a 4"x26" belt and I will have them custom made unless I can find a source. 12" Saw blades with low tooth count for ripping are hard to find with the diamond knock out, I will machine out the diamond from a new blade if I can't find a source for one. These big old tools are helping me mill and shape my own timbers from logs on my property to timberframe my new home in about a year from now, lots of beams to cut!
Ebay First
Check on Ebay first. I'm sometimes amazed at what I find.
The check Forrest Saw blades. They will make up whatever you need, but may have just what you need in stock.
Also, look for 300mm blades, they are 11.81-inch diameter. Not quite 12-inch but really close. And, I seem to remember something about, the stock blade being only 11-7/8-inch.

My saw is 220 volts AC or DC single phase , seen one on here that was only 115 volts, I think mine is a lot older , it's dirty as all get out but work's fine, trying to upload a picture of the tag I think you can make it out.ill clean it up one day this week, I love old tools
