This year we’ve been experimenting with insulation in our customer’s homes (with their permission & approval). We do a standard fiberglass batt job and offer options of either dense pack cellulose or skim & batt. If this is a local term, skim & batt is a thin layer of polyurethane foam sprayed between the studs before the fg batt is installed and vapor barrier installed. I’ve heard conflicting information on both and the jury is still out. I personally despise plain fiberglass insulation because it isn’t worth squat unless it’s properly installed and it’s near impossible to get a perfect installation (not to mention air travels through it).
My question is, “What’s the best?”. I know everyone’s got an opinion and most of them stink…….but I want to hear them.
I personally favor cellulose for the recycling aspect and such, but I’ve heard the argument for settling….which supposedly dense pack will not. But the skim and batt is a pretty nifty concept and the installation crew that does it does an excellent job.
Thoughts?….

cellulose...
the skim part is ok.. but loose the batts
b but hey, whatta i no ?
*Oh, I agree that batt insulation is a bad idea because of air movement, but when coupled with the urethane, I believe it solves the problem of air movement. I believe that at this time I favor cellulose but I'm riding the fence until field testing results come in. Maybe FHB should do an article comparing the two (hint, hint ;) ).John
