Anyone have any experience with skimming sheetrock?
I was planning to use 5/8″ with the normal tape / plaster / sanding, but my drywaller wants to use 1/2″ and skip the sanding and skim the entire wall – a technique he saw on Villa’s show and he is keen on trying.
He’s an old lath and plaster man who is obessed with making the joints disappear.
I don’t mind trying the skimming, but I am a little concerned using 1/2″ rock even though everything is on 16″oc’s.
thanks

I don't see a problem unless it's a ceiling, in which case I'd use 5/8".

1/2 is fine and typical for walls......jump to 5/8th if it makes ya feel better.....and both could be skimmed. I have skimmed plenty in the past to make a nice base for matching existing plaster. If he's an old paster guy....it'll probably turn out great. Jeff.......Sometimes on the toll road of life.....a handful of change is good.......
No problem with either rock. We skim all the jobs here. Looks a little more handcrafted like old plaster. Very little sanding is ever needed. As a matter of fact, it can be dampsponged as it sets up to smooth edges and avoid all sanding.
